Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Zamora.
Hi Michael, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Posival when I was 18 in 2013, after my first year of college. I started playing guitar when I was 15, teaching myself from watching YouTube videos, eventually teaching myself how to sing at 18 so that I could sing the songs I was writing at the time. I have always been an original artist since I began learning my instrument. Writing songs has been my focus with playing guitar since the first time I picked up a guitar at the age of 11. We have had many lineup changes but are currently in the process of booking a festival and going on another tour upon the release of our 4th album Summer School. We have released 3 full-length albums currently and are looking forward to playing more shows. Our next show is September 24th at Andy’s Bar in Denton. We are currently approaching our 10-year anniversary as a band and would love to finally get into playing live and going on tour as an established band now that our financial and personal lives are the most stable it’s ever been. The current lineup of the band is Michael Zamora on Guitar and Vocals, Clint Watts on Bass and Vocals, and Will Huebner on Drums.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been easy, especially in the day and age of cancel culture; we live in a society where people are incentivized to behave poorly or egotistical to tear other people down. Plenty of people have continually tried to thwart our progress as a band since 2015, unsuccessfully. Most recently, back in May, someone created an Instagram trying to cancel our band because I was “standing too close” to someone at a punk show and “staring at them” while I was playing on stage. I immediately took screenshots of the account and sent them to everyone I have known in the music scene that we play shows with to be completely transparent with everyone we do business with, and they have all disregarded it as extremely silly and childish. I had many eyewitnesses that can confirm that I wasn’t doing anything suspicious since I never go out alone. I’m always out with friends or people I know. The “accuser” is still apparently reaching out to venues with these rumors and has continued to try and stop us from doing things as a band but has been unsuccessful since these allegations are completely ridiculous. Unfortunately, this is where we are right now as a society. People are grasping at straws to get any amount of attention they can get and are willing to use their own delusions for their own personal gain and it doesn’t do anything except make me feel sorry for them since it’s obvious that everyone is really over this whole cancel culture thing. In my opinion, if you’re not doing anything illegal, you have nothing to feel guilty about. If these people really felt as uncomfortable as they claim to have felt, they would and should have confronted me about it first before taking to social media, which of course, they didn’t.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a punk band. We create abrasive and offensive music purely for the sake of having fun and making light of serious issues. Everyone in the band appreciates comedy and having a good time and it really comes through in our music. We are all deep thinkers, so our music is cerebral but also playful. We don’t take life, or our art, too seriously.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have neutral feelings about Dallas. There are some positive things about the city for sure, and I do enjoy going to Dallas often. But recently, there seems to be a lot of crime that makes not only myself feel unsafe but also a lot of my friends feel unsafe. I think Dallas has a lot to offer but with the influx of people from out of state moving to Dallas along with the issues that persist in the city, I would like to see Dallas develop a stronger community of people that are like-minded and interested in more protection for the people that like to visit the city.
