Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Phelan.
Hi Michelle, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always loved listening to people. Hearing about what their experiences are, their thoughts, beliefs, joys, and struggles. People truly inspire me. My first introduction to Psychology was in high school, and although I don’t remember much of that class, I do remember feeling a connection in it. Fast forward to my freshman year in college at the University of Kansas where I was thrown into a sea of new students – some who had a path laid out, many who were wandering.
I was wandering. As I took more classes, I eventually chose my majors – Psychology and Women’s Studies. It wasn’t until 9 years later, and a few jobs in different industries, that I decided to continue my education at the University of North Texas pursing a master’s degree in Counseling. That journey lead me through personal and professional growth I had never expected. It’s been a journey, one that I’m grateful for.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
At times, yes, the road felt smooth. Looking back, the pieces of the puzzle always fit together – the timing of my classes aligning with my personal life, connections, and the ability to walk the path at my pace. The experiences are where I gained my professional growth via my personal obstacles. Much of the process of becoming a counselor was (and continues to be) grounded in my own self-exploration, acceptance, and growth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and I work in a private practice. I have training in working with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and specialize in working with individuals who are navigating their paths to, through, and beyond pregnancy. I love working with moms! I also have experience with and enjoy working with an array of concerns including, yet not limited to: sexual trauma, abuse, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, and the stressors of life. I strive to create a safe, empathetic, and accepting environment for my clients where we can work together through their processes of healing.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Memories of my dog, Honey. She was always there as a support and a protector – all without judgment. A professional goal of mine is to include a therapy dog in my practice.
