Conversations with Mindy Hartman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Hartman.

Mindy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have a degree in Fashion Design and Patternmaking from Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising of Los Angeles. I started out as a patternmaker and designer for Prom Dresses but my true love was costumes so I transitioned to working as a costumer in the film industry. I worked with many big names of the day, Madonna, Morgan Freeman, Andy Griffith, to name a few. I loved my job but was ready to start a family and the long hours were not compatible with motherhood. Once my children started school, I partnered with a Bridal store doing their alteration from my home. Eventually, I opened my own business. I’ve been doing bridal alterations for over 20 years. I moved to Dallas from California 6 years ago to be near grandchildren.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Initially, the seasonality of the wedding industry had me working 24/7 during the spring and fall wedding seasons so that I could make it through the slow times. Fortunately, the wedding industry has evolved and weddings happen year round.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I approach each wedding dress as a creative project instead of a business prospect. I have made peace with this perspective, which does not lead to great profits, because it fills my soul as I’ve always been an artistic soul needing a creative outlet. I love working with the beautiful fabrics. Each dress needs to be approached differently, keeping my creative mind engaged. I love making a bride who is nervous about her dress initially, feel confident and gorgeous once I have worked my magic.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Do what you love and you’ll never work a day.
