Conversations with Modupe Akinlabi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Modupe Akinlabi.

Hi Modupe , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My college degree is in Engineering. I also acquired some human resources and administration, customer service, sales experiences from Nigeria.
I love math and reading,so I started introducing my children to numbers and reading early and consistently.

My son and daughter started reading at ages 4 and 3. Their school teachers respectively encouraged me to come teach in the classroom.
It took me about 3yrs to make up my mind.

After joining the prek campus for 5years, then we had COVID 19 lock down. During the lock down,I was able to process my childcare license.

Today,we are still caring and teaching children from 18months to school ages.
Sometimes, the children dont want to go home because they are having too much fun..

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I won’t say there were any struggles. We do have state mentors assigned to each childcare provider. We do have lots of trainings.
The most important thing is to have the patience to work with children, love the children and have good communication with the parents.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a childcare provider and a brain developer. As a team,we go above and beyond to ensure the children are ready for big school as they clock 4 or 5 years of age.
Our foundation helps with hands on science/gardening,reading,writing, language/ communication arts, music, technology and field trips.
We provide home made meals, at summer time we have lots of home grown fruits and vegetables.
We are also 4-star rated childcare provider with the Texas Rising Star.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is getting the children in our care ready for ‘big school’ . Success is being able to work with children and watch them develop their social emotionally, physically, cognitively, fine/gross motor skills and also with their language and communication skills. Success is having a waiting lists especially for siblings and having happy families.
