Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Baker.
Hi Monica , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The idea for Crown and Clover Headspa started years ago when I was still in corporate healthcare, traveling constantly. Back in 2018, I discovered a tiny headspa tucked in the corner of a nail salon, and it completely captivated me—it was one of the most relaxing experiences I’d ever had. I remember thinking, this concept could be elevated into a true spa experience.
My background is in cardiology and customer experience, and I’ve always had a knack for identifying what makes clients feel genuinely cared for. Before retiring from corporate life, I knew I wanted to build something of my own—something that I could share and use to care for others, while also selfishly creating my own dream service.
In 2022, I left my corporate role to pursue this full-time and began developing Crown and Clover. The name has a double meaning: “where everyone has a crown” is both literal and figurative. Our treatments focus on the crown of the head, but also on reminding every guest that they matter and deserve to be cared for.
The headspa experience I’ve created is immersive—it blends the best parts of services people already love but often find incomplete. For example, in a massage, the scalp and face are rarely the focus, yet that’s where so much tension and relief live. At the salon, everyone says the shampoo is the best part, but it ends too quickly. And with a facial, I wanted the expertise of licensed estheticians guiding what’s applied—not just a random mask.
Enter Crown and Clover Headspa—a space that brings it all together. A place where the comfort of a hair bath meets the intention of skincare, where the experience is both deeply relaxing and clinically thoughtful. It’s where care, touch, and experience meet.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all—but every challenge has been part of building something meaningful. When I left corporate healthcare to start Crown and Clover, I went from managing teams and systems that were already established to creating everything from scratch. I had to learn commercial real estate, renovation management, branding, hiring, marketing—every layer of it.
There were moments where I questioned if I’d taken on too much, especially when construction delays or budget surprises hit. But I reminded myself that this wasn’t just about opening a spa—it was about creating a new category of experience.
I also had to balance my perfectionism with progress. I wanted every detail to reflect care—from the texture of the linens to how clients are greeted—and sometimes that meant slowing down to get it right.
What kept me going was the “why.” I knew I was building something that would genuinely help people slow down, feel cared for, and leave feeling renewed. The struggles made the vision clearer, and the journey taught me resilience, patience, and trust in my own leadership.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I’m most proud of is taking the leap—betting on myself. Leaving a steady paycheck to build something from scratch was one of the hardest, yet most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.
Crown and Clover Headspa was created to give people permission to pause—to experience something elevated, personal, and meaningful. Every detail, from the treatments to the “living room” where guests can sit and unwind, is designed to make people feel seen and valued.
We recognize that when someone walks through our doors, it’s their moment. For that hour, it’s all about them—being cared for, listened to, and reminded that they matter. That’s what truly sets Crown and Clover Headspa apart.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’m a total podcast junkie—especially Armchair Expert. For me, it’s personal growth and self-care rolled into one. I’m a true “Armcherry” (IYKYK). It’s my time to listen, laugh, and learn from people who are open about their journeys—their wins, failures, and everything in between. The guests come from every background imaginable: scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, and everyday people with fascinating stories. I always walk away with a new perspective or something that shifts how I think.
I also love diving into new marketing and social media strategies—not to chase trends, but to stay educated. The way businesses connect with clients has completely changed, and I enjoy learning how storytelling and authenticity now play such a big role in that.
