Conversations with Mya Evans

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Evans.

Hi Mya, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Well, I’ve been dancing my whole life, I’ve always been very passionate about it but for a long time, I never considered pursuing anything related to dance because of how it’s portrayed as a career that doesn’t pay very well. When I made the drill team in high school after I didn’t my first year and completely transformed my body and self-esteem it made me confident that I could do anything if I worked hard enough. So, I came to TWU to study Dance Education. In my sophomore year, one day when I was at the cafe the vision of High Caliber came to mind. It’s odd, the creator always dropped hints in my mind about this vision but that was the first time it came through that clear. Ever since then building and forming the identity of this company has been a slow evolution, and it’s still in the process now. I’m hoping to have the company up and successfully running by the time I graduate undergrad.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think every journey has its obstacles, mine is no different. Wanting to be a dancer requires resources along with the financial support to back that. I grew up in a single-parent home so I didn’t get the whole studio experience but my mother and my family made sure they did everything they could to keep me in programs or little league teams to keep me dancing, and for that I’m grateful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
People always asking me what I wanna do with my dance degree once I finish school and I always tell them my goal is to be a businesswoman. I am a dancer that specializes in choreography and dance teaching (team, group, and privates). I also make juices and run a production company High Caliber Divisions, that is aspiring to elevate the perspective of people of the African Diaspora, through all lenses. I am most proud of my recent performance in, “Black Women Steps Up To Mic” By Kourtney Surgent. I think what sets me apart from others is my desire and openness to learn and try anything when it comes to expanding my knowledge on dance and creating.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I was around eight years old and I had just finished a three-week dance intensive with Dallas Black in the summer. We finished the camp with a big performance that weekend. After my performance my mom took me to Starbucks, I had my first Starbucks drink ever and then I went home and watched Degrassi with my mom and ate Wendy’s with my mom. I had an amazing childhood full of adventure and travels, but that day I felt truly happy, it’s the first thing that came to mind.
