Conversations with Mya Hoskin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mya Hoskin.

Hi Mya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was younger, I attended Barbizon Modeling Agency which inspired me to get into makeup. I was 15 years old when I started doing my own makeup. I begin to watch lots of YouTube tutorials which helped me tremendously. I soon started to practice on one of my cousins. That’s when I realized that it wasn’t just something I loved, it was my passion. During the years of me progressing I’ve started taking clients. Just seeing how my clients are happy with the result makes me happy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I can honestly say it hasn’t always been a smooth road. There was actual a time where I was also selling products & doing makeup. You can make quite a bit of money in retail, it’s all about how you manage your business. For me, it was a lot only because it was something new. I had too much in inventory but not a high demand for it. I would spend way too much money on things I didn’t need. I did make good sales on some of the products I had. Now looking back, since I have a management background, I know how to manage better and order what I need.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am currently a Grocery Manager at Kroger, and I manage different departments. I’m a freelance Photographer, and I specialize in portraits. I’m also a freelance Makeup Artist, and I specialize in natural makeup… I am known for allowing women to see their beauty beyond the makeup by advancing their beauty. I am most proud of the way I keep going when it comes to being a business owner. Sometimes it can be challenging, you know nothings ever perfect. What sets me apart is that I’m very professional when it comes to my businesses. I’m consistent; I’m confident in everything that I do… I’m always trying to see how I can improve and be a help to others.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
My advice for those who are just starting out I would say definitely write down the vision. Don’t rush into it take your time. Make sure you’re not just looking at the pros when comes to business because there is some cons. Network, network, network! Be teachable and learn to take criticism. Don’t compare yourself to others. Focus on how you are different and how what you bring to the table is different. God will make room for you in whatever industry you’re going into. Do your own research don’t depend too much on people give you the blueprint.
