Conversations with Nico

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nico.

Nico

Hi Nico, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Along the Etruscan Coast, in Piombino, Italy, Calamari For Lunch started making music in 2018. Jamming was the key at the beginning, but in 2019 it was time to call the jams songs!

5-piece band, Calamri For Lunch are all good friends, so it was easy for them to find a musical identity.

In close contact with their London-based frontman, they gradually reached a larger audience.

In 2020 Calamari For Lunch got signed by (R)esisto Distribuzione, an Italian indie label based in Ferrara, Italy. In April 2020, their first single, “In The Lounge,” was released followed by “Mesmerize” in October 2020.

After a positive response, the self-titled album “Calamari For Lunch” was released in November 2020.

Reviewed by Italian and international music magazines like Rumore, Rock.it, it’s Psychedelic Baby Magazine, “Calamari For Lunch,” had a great impact on the psychedelic rock scene!

With an acid sound combined with the sweetness of a light arrangement, a sweet and sour mix pervades the album entirely with a simplicity of intriguing melodies.

The Pandemic and the long periods of lockdown gave them the chance to live a new creative experience. Calamari For Lunch are moving on, and they started working on a new material, a new chapter called “Mind Games.

On November 11th, 2022, the new single “Dry Skin” was self-released, followed by “Secret Sphere” on February 3rd, 2023.

Two more singles were released, “Blind Brutality on March 17th,2023, and “Space Honey” on April 21st, 2023.

The new Calamari For Lunch album “Mind Games” was released on May 26th, 2023, which re-emphasizes the psychedelic path, with dark tones from Stoner Rock mixed with catchy melodies.

A dark album with glimmers of light like fireflies in the middle of the night lighting the way…”Mind Games is a dark, mellow, expressive, romantic, and explosive album.

Recorded at Calamari For Lunch’s studios and mixed and mastered at Alex Sportelli Recording Studios in Cascina, Italy.

At the moment, Calamari For Lunch are on tour presenting their new project.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid was a huge obstacle. Because of that, we had to postpone our first singles, including the album “Calamari For Lunch”. We waited till we could play live again then we released it.

By saying that, through Covid, we managed to work on the new album “Mind Games.

We are very happy with the results, focusing our energies on it

Fans seem to like it, and this gives us massive hope for future work.

Apart from that, so far, so good! Playing gigs and sharing our music this what we like the most!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We love experimenting without having no limits. Inspiration comes from all of us, despite the genre we like and listen to.

It’s like a bunch of mates who want to have fun and enjoy the time together.

Being in a room and play can direct you in many ways, ways that each of us wants to take and see where it goes…and if you can get as much as you can from the journeys, you probably end up creating something that we call an “album.”

We are very much inspired by the Neo-Psychedelia and Stoner Rock; combined with catchy melodies our sound could be a bit different from the two genres I mentioned. At the moment, for example, I’ve been listening to a lot of Folk Rock like Tim Buckley and Nick Drake, so our way to create music could change on our next project.

We are proud of what we did so far; we did well considering that we are together as a band for not long.

What sets us apart from others?

Our name Calamari For Lunch!

I’m kidding! lol

I imagine we are good at sending magical vibes to people through our music and this is what we are doing music for.

What matters most to you? Why?
It matters what we are doing, so like that, we can know ourselves better and deeper. Through the journey with your mates, you open up without being asked to, and when it’s open, you let the music go.
