Conversations with Omar Perez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omar Perez.

Hi Omar, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started with my younger sisters they were like my trial and error they hated me doing their hair and makeup because I honestly sucked at it! They would actually charge me 5$ or 10$ to sit down and practice on them, but it wasn’t until I moved from Georgia to Oklahoma that I really dove deep into it and when I became interested in the industry, I enrolled into a cosmetology program from school I met an amazing mentor Gwen who guided me on how to start my kit rates and contracts and I assisted her for over a year until I became my own brand BeautybyOmar. through trial-and-error beautybyomar did not take off just the way I wanted to and fell into the corporate world worked for Almost 8 years and became super drained. I would do hair and makeup on the side weekends mostly and that’s when I was the happiest. I remember a bride booked to travel from Texas to Las Vegas room booked services paid for this was a first for me so I was super excited when I asked for time off at the corporate job, I was denied my paid time off, I honestly couldn’t leave the bride stranded without a hair and makeup artist so I called in sick. Only to come back with no job but at that point, I was so invested in my hair and makeup business and had worked so hard to build my clientele so I decided to take my leap of faith and thank you to my beautiful team at the body labb fast forward 3 years later Beautybyomar is bigger and better than ever before and I never in a million years did I think I would be doing this full time! sometimes even now I sit in my living room just in awe because I can’t keep up with my inquiries!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all the obstacles I endured during this process was the most difficult one, when I took my leap of faith, I was living by myself and couldn’t afford rent to the point of eviction. I could have easily given up and moved back in with my parents to Oklahoma but instead, I kept going I kept networking trying to put my name out there as much as possible giving free work away collaborating with photographers and collaborating with as many influencers as I could. Once I let go of that fear it’s like everything started flourishing. It’s been a great journey thus far and I wouldn’t take anything I went through back because it’s made me who I am today!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I consider myself a natural glam artist not to heavy not to light just a right in between my signature look is a bronzey glam love the br0wns golds with a nude lip. that’s my favorite combination! I Specialize in pretty much everything but my absolute favorite is music video sets. My style above all sets me apart I can do really cool editorial glam, the heavy Texas glam, or a natural makeup no-makeup look

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In this industry it’s all about risk-taking you have to set yourself apart, no one likes the same thing over and overtake classes invest in yourself invest money into your kit and sacrifice what others aren’t willing to do. So, if that means not going out for some drinks or dinner because you’re building your kit or taking expensive classes you have to do it those are risks that will take you far in this career.
