Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige DeRuyscher
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I fell in love with writing at an early age, writing my first book about my cat in second grade. After working at the local newspaper in high school, I majored in English – Creative Writing in college and explored all types of writing. My first job was as an Editor with Hallmark Cards, which opened many doors for me. After leaving Hallmark, I ventured out to start my own freelance business, “Paige in the Shed,” which continues today. My faith is important to me, so my path led to inspirational Christian writing, which is what I often focus on.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. Being a writer makes you vulnerable to criticism. You have to be firmly rooted in your craft and confident in your abilities, no matter what kind of feedback you receive. Working in a corporate job was a guarantee of a salary and consistent work. Freelance is more challenging as you never know where your next job is coming from.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have found great purpose in using my writing to communicate God’s love to people. I am most proud of the blog I started after coming out of a terribly difficult time in my life to encourage others not to give up. (www.thewholemaker.com) I’ve been told that the voice in my writing sets me apart. I try to express the grace, compassion and tenderness God has for us, and that we are called to have for one another.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
The editor of the Marysville Advocate, my hometown newspaper, who took a chance on having an inexperienced high school kid write for him. My parents who have always believed in my gifts and encouraged me to keep writing. My husband, who’s been one of my biggest fans, and who works hard to support our family so that I can thrive in my freelance business.
