Conversations with Pamela Tuckey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Tuckey.

Hi Pamela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my photography journey as a young mother in the early ’80s wanting to take photographs of my children. I bought my first Canon film camera and the manual that came with it was so hard to grasp the unfamiliar terminology of the f-stops, aperture, and shutter speeds. The aperture that has the widest opening is the smallest number, for example, an f.22 is small and an f.18 is large. I took night classes and taught myself as well. Shooting in manual mode is natural to me now and the only way I shoot so I have complete control over every aspect of my images.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a learning curve for sure, to pick up a camera and shoot, getting a beautiful image may appear as easy as pressing the shutter button, but it is so much more complicated than that. I hear all the time, “Your images are beautiful, you must have a great camera.” One of my favorite photography-related quotes I can relate to so much for that very reason. ” A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front door, as he entered the host said ‘I love your photos – they’re wonderful; you must have a really fantastic camera.’ He said nothing until dinner was finished: then he said ‘That was a wonderful dinner; you must have a fantastic stove.”

It is not the typewriter that wrote the book or the stove that cooked the meal. It is the creative person with the skills and hard-earned talent to produce the final product. A camera is a creative tool but it did not take the photo.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in glamour, boudoir, headshots, personal branding, and high school seniors. I have found that my niche is really starting to define itself for women who want a beautiful portrait for themselves and their significant other. A lot of my sessions include headshots, boudoir, and glamour all in one. I have done several sessions for men that incorporate a business image and a personal portrait as well. I do family sessions and have worked with bands to shoot their images for social media, so I have no limit as far as what I can do.

I feel am most known for my portraits of women. I started a campaign for 40 women over 40 and the response has been incredible. What I think sets me apart is my photographic style of shooting. I like magazine-styled images that evoke a Vogue or Vanity Fair cover photo. I also like dark and moody images and plan to incorporate some Fine Art Nudes into my Boudoir sessions.

What sets me apart from others is my laid-back personality, which so many clients have mentioned in their testimonials. I am authentic, what you see is what you get down to earth, yet professional and I can direct and pose clients right down to facial expressions, fingers, and body shape. I have an extensive wardrobe for my clients in addition to what they may choose to bring. Three racks of tulle, satin, chiffon, lace, fur, leather, and sequins. Some of my things: jewelry and attire are vintage and some are new, some are 2400.00, some are 5.00 bargains, and everything in between. I have full-sized blush-colored angel wings that everyone loves and they all want t0 wear. Gorgeous tulle robes in 4 different colors I like to call my Zsa Zsa Robes. I often pull from my own closet to style my clients as well.

What does success mean to you?
Success to me is doing what you love, following your true passion, and making people incredibly happy with the work you do and the service you provide. I tell my clients that my camera is really just a mirror, reflecting how I see them and how I want them to see themselves with confidence. Empowering each client, and boosting self-esteem with my camera is my forte. I love it, the stories, tears, laughter, hugs and all. My clients a so much more than just a photoshoot to me.
