Conversations with Phillip Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Washington.

Hi Phillip, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
Very early on, I decided I wanted to be an entrepreneur. Since I didn’t feel college could help me do that, but my mother and father insisted I go, I decided to major in finance. That’s when I fell in love with the money side of business. I did a few internships and got a 100% commission sales job out of college selling mutual funds and insurance for a large financial services company.

I did that for about a decade before leaving the product sales side to start my own wealth management company (Stone Hill Wealth Management), managing money for high-income and high-net-worth families. I created a podcast media company (Wealth Building Made Simple) to market my services as wealth manager, and as others noticed the success I had building a clientele without cold calling the media company turned into a business.

At the core of what I do is inspire, educate, and advise people on building wealth in a simple and easy way that allows them to enjoy the journey. The true wealth is in the journey, not the destination.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. There were plenty of lessons I had to learn, and many more I’m learning every day. One of the life lessons I have learned is that how we feel attracts our future experiences. I spent a lot of time justifying my worth to my clients from that feeling place. I found myself with clients who repeatedly asked me to justify my services or didn’t fully appreciate my services.

Once I stopped feeling the need to justify myself and attracted clients from an emotional state of confidence and security, my relationship with my clients became one of deep friendship and appreciation. It wasn’t just new clients that I attracted who were different, the relationship between my long-term clients improved significantly.

Another important life lesson I learned was that it’s not hard to stay up to date on where the business and investing market is going when you’re not judging the present. When we judge what is, we don’t see the full picture and we miss the opportunities to position ourselves for the future. That’s HUGE.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My role in my companies has evolved. I have a great team that helps me run both businesses. My specialty today is more of a creative producer for my podcast which is the engine that attracts clients for both my wealth management company and my newsletter.

I’m likely most known in the community for being an educator. Many people in the community consume my podcast in full on the podcast platform or via clips we put out on social media. I’m most proud of the fact that my path to where I am now has been a complete act of faith that is expressing itself moment by moment better than I envisioned it in my head.

I don’t know of any other wealth managers who built a business over the last 7 years without cold calling with complete faith in creating content that will attract clients. I’m sure there are others, but in my world, it was nonexistent. I’m also proud of the growing relationships I have my clients and audience. I am daily thankful that I get paid to do what I do. If I had $100 million in the bank, I would still do it because it’s a labor of love. I use the word labor lightly because it doesn’t feel that way to me.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Dallas. I love the diverse culture. I love the energy. I love the people. I really love how it’s growing. We can get different experiences in so many parts of the metroplex. It’s not at all a monolithic area. I see Dallas as one of the top centers of economic development in the US over the next 50 years. I was born and raised in Houston, but all the homes my wife and I have owned together were here, and both of our boys were born here. This is home for me.

If I could add one thing to Dallas, it would be a beach. I love beaches!
