Conversations with Rashaun Robinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashaun Robinson

Hi Rashaun, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It all started on September 5th, 2016 when I decided to use this
water color set from hobby lobby and paint my black trench coat. I was seventeen going on eighteen and I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my life or how I can contribute to society. I always wanted to make clothes but never knew how. And that day, it just hit me out of nowhere … next thing you know, everyday in school, all I was wearing were clothes painted by me. Back then, I liked the idea of creating something I haven’t seen anyone else create – even if it looked mediocre to some people. I kept that mentality for 8 years and I’ve been progressing all the way to now. I don’t paint as often now that I’m focused on more intricate ideas, but the skill is forever in me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never been smooth. That’s kind of where the name “Crunchy Riot” comes from. My journey to freedom of expression was and will never be easy, but that’s kind of the fun part. A lot of people most of the time won’t understand how much you love creating something and showing it off – in fact they may look down on you and think you don’t take life seriously. It’s the territory that comes with being an artist. I wasn’t supported the way I expected when I first started and at times I felt very judged, but getting older I just learned to take it to the chin and keep doing me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a freelance painter & clothing designer who specializes in hand painting on clothing. One of the many things I’m proud of is that I’m still doing what I love to do despite the trials and tribulations. I’ve been a part of a lot of shows with a lot of unique hard working individuals. What separates my brand from others is my passion, my vision and distinctive ability to develop many ideas as well as making those ideas become a reality.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’d say Ive taken a lot of risk, it’s obligatory to be a risk taker if you want to be an artist or any type of creative. There are going to be times you’re going to put out an idea and no one will buy it or even acknowledge it. One thing I’m still getting use to is eliminating any expectations I have prior to things happening. Just learning by being hands on with everything and learning to be better decision maker as you get older all goes into being a risk taker to me personally.
