Today we’d like to introduce you to Rasy Ran.
Hi Rasy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It started in high school when I borrowed a friend’s camera. I was taking a lot of pictures of cars, people I knew, and events happening around me. I decided to pursue it at University of Texas at Arlington and graduated with my BFA in Photography.
There was some guidance, but I was in the pits with several colleagues and friends who were also beginning photographers at the time. Lots and lots of slogging through the hurdles business-wise, which I chalk it all up to lessons learned.
Now it’s been over a decade of freelancing full time while juggling the family role with two sons and a beautiful wife.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t. At least definitely in the beginning. I was a yes man at the time, saying yes to absolutely everything to take in work and keep myself busy.
If there are two key moments that I look back on as markers in my career it would be: the first time feeling burnout and valuing my services/time.
I didn’t fully understand how the two go hand-in-hand, but one day it just clicked. I raised rates that valued my time more and gave me more pauses. It took too long to realize that saying no to others sometimes means yes to me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I photograph automotive commercial work, events, portraiture and lifestyle portraiture primarily.
Definitely most proud of my automotive work, it’s a dream that became reality to my teenage self.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck has been keeping me humble. There are times of feast and famine in the freelance business world, as one friend puts it. If by chance my name gets passed through the grapevine and my work stands along with my reputation, that’s an open door awaiting me.
A lot of my session involves the outdoors, so during rainy season there’s a lot of praying to the weather gods.
