Today we’d like to introduce you to Rocky Mccurtis.

Rocky Mccurtis

Hi Rocky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Rocky, Travel Nail Technician & Owner of LaRoc Nailz

My name is Rocky, and I am the owner of LaRoc Nailz, a travel-based nail technician business. Originally from Florida and Georgia, I’ve always been passionate about exploring my diverse talents. Throughout my time in Florida, I immersed myself in a variety of pursuits—from playing sports in school to attending medical college, and even working as a celebrity photographer at Universal Studios. Despite my wide-ranging experiences, I felt that something new was calling me.

It wasn’t until a conversation with a friend, who was studying cosmetology at the time, that I considered nails as a career. She suggested, “Rocky, why don’t you do nails? You’re the most talented person I know, and you can literally do anything.” At first, I was skeptical. “Nails?” I thought. It wasn’t something I had ever considered, but I’ve always been someone who takes initiative and enjoys learning new skills. My mom had taught me to do hair when I was 13, so I was no stranger to self-sufficiency.

Inspired by her encouragement, I decided to dive in. My friend sent me a list of nail supplies, and I ordered everything I needed. Within three to four weeks, I learned how to do a full set. On January 19, 2020, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I did my first set of nails. Just a week later, friends started paying me $50 to $75 per set, encouraging me to share my work on social media.

When I posted my designs, the response was overwhelming. Despite being a beginner, my work quickly gained traction. With much of the world in lockdown, my clientele grew rapidly. I went from seeing one client a day to four or five, and within a few months, my freestyle nail art—especially my bold, glow-in-the-dark creations—went viral on Facebook and Instagram. My skills had advanced quickly, and soon I was traveling to different states like Mississippi, Atlanta, and Orlando to book appointments. I fell in love with the craft and the opportunity to connect with people through my art.

From 2019 to 2024, my life underwent a remarkable transformation. By God’s grace, I relocated from Upstate New York to Texas, in January 2023. Now, I’m based in Dallas, ready to embrace new opportunities and align with God’s purpose for my life. I now offer private bookings in Downtown Dallas, where my mission is to provide personalized services that cater to each client’s unique needs and desires.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
A significant challenge I faced during this journey was learning to trust in God’s timing. Life seemed to be moving at an overwhelming pace, and I felt as though time was slipping away. I was concerned about losing my New York clientele, uncertain of how long it would take to build my client base again, and fearful of the prospect of starting over.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a self-taught nail technician with nearly six years of experience, specializing in acrylic nails. What sets me apart is not just my technical skill, but the unique experience I create for my clients. I’m known for my creativity, vibrant personality, and positive energy, which I believe contribute to the welcoming atmosphere I cultivate in every session.

What truly distinguishes my work is my commitment to putting myself in the client’s shoes. I prioritize listening to their needs, ensuring they feel heard, valued, and fully relaxed throughout their appointment. Additionally, I offer a variety of special add-ons for clients who view their nail appointments as a much-needed escape, allowing them to recharge and unwind while being pampered. It’s all about creating a holistic, personalized experience that goes beyond just the nails.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
One of the key reasons for my success in both my career and life is my personality. I bring a unique blend of humor, empathy, and wisdom to every interaction. I’m the friend who can make you laugh, but also offer a listening ear or words of guidance when needed. With a big heart and a deep passion for giving, I strive to make a positive impact in every aspect of my work.

For me, each nail set is an opportunity not only to create something eye-catching but also to offer my clients a sense of luxury and self-worth. My goal is for every set to not only go viral but to leave someone feeling like they’ve experienced something special—something they may not have thought they could afford. Ultimately, I do nails because I truly love the craft, and I’m driven by the joy it brings to both me and my clients.
