Conversations with Ruby Wilke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Wilke.

Ruby, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got started with my business growing produce in a 5 acre garden behind my house. I was very successful growing and selling. I was making specialty cakes and jellies, pickles using my produce under cottage law. Eventually, it outgrew my home kitchen and I decided it was time to expand into a store. Once the produce was up and going I expanded into Bailey Farms and Bakery. Opening a kitchen with specialty to go meals. Then added a coffee machine with breakfast items farm to table. We have been in business since 2014.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think any business owner would tell you it’s not all smooth sailing. We struggled for years managing what worked and what didn’t. I am so personally lucky that my family was on board, and lots of friends to help along the way. I would say the hardest part for us was managing finance and inventory. We are such a small town that is growing so fast, getting inventory was a huge problem. We have solved a lot of those issues.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am the owner of Bailey Farms and bakery. I am a baker, crafter and grower. I love growing fresh local veggies for our community. I am very crafty some might call me a florist, a decorator, the produce lady. I enjoy making crafts for the schools, we’ve done mums for homecoming, wedding flowers and cakes. Catering, not to mention lunch and specialty coffee. My favorite part of my job would be decorating cakes. I have been blessed to be able to decorate some really awesome cakes. Nothing is better than the smiles from your customers when you create a work of art with a cake.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I wouldn’t really say luck had any part. Just an entrepreneur whose hard work and dedication paid off.
