Conversations with Sarah Alonzo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Alonzo.

Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I got my professional start the summer after I graduated high school, I did makeup for a bridal party and loved every minute of getting people ready for big life events. After that, I continued to do various makeup gigs and eventually started a Salon Manager Internship in New York City. It was such a fabulous time. I learned how to run a successful luxury salon at the age of 18.

I eventually moved back to Southern California and got my feet wet doing makeup, hair, and fashion styling for photography. I worked alongside professional photographers and modeling agencies in Los Angeles and Orange County to help new talent get signed and booked for jobs. It was so fun making sure my clients looked beautiful on camera. A years went by, and I fell madly in love with Mr. Alonzo and loved to Dallas.

To my surprise, I discovered that Dallas was full of fabulous, fashion-forward people that love to look and feel beautiful. I fit right in! As the sayings goes, “I wasn’t born here, but I got here as fast as I could.”

I’ve met the most fascinating people doing hair and makeup here in Dallas. I’ve been fortunate enough to build my dream clientele here and can’t wait to continue making people smile with confidence.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has not been the smoothest even though it might look that way from the outside. The first few years were financially draining. I was working with big clients and building my portfolio but being in markets where Hairstylists and Makeup Artists are over-saturated left paying gigs hard to come by. I worked for free for YEARS if you can believe it. But I was hungry to succeed and finally learned how to negotiate fair pay and be compensated for my time and talent.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in on-location blowouts & makeup applications. I also teach classes on how to apply makeup properly. My clients love getting my signature blowout at home coupled with a beautiful, gold smokey eye.

I’m most proud of the reputation I have. I’ve worked with a lot of popular beauty companies before spearheading my own venture including Drybar, Blushington, and Brite Beauty, and all my clients know that when you book with me, I arrive 10 minutes early, I create flawless looks, and we get to have fun girl talk!

What sets me apart from other artists is being dependable. I’ve heard so many horror stories of other artists ghosting their clients or no showing them on a big day, and that just doesn’t happen when your my client.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
After every client, I do a self-reflection session, where I recount products and techniques used and find opportunities for refinement. I have a file on every client I’ve done (even if they live out of state) where I document color matches and preferences. For example, if a client doesn’t like hairspray, I’ll write that down so I am prepared for the next time, and the client doesn’t have to remind me.

Pricing:

  • Makeup Applications $174
  • Blowouts $84
