Today we’d like to introduce you to Selena Yang.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Selena, from Houston tx, and I’m a hairstylist in Dallas. I was originally a speech pathologist and then I did a career change 6 years in to pursue my childhood dream to be a hairstylist. It was not an easy decision, but I’m so happy I made the switch. If anything I regret not doing it sooner!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say it was smooth as in easy, but it wasn’t tumultuous either because I had so much support from loved ones. I had a clear goal and I did everything I could to stay on path. I was extremely motivated, so I made sure I had a job lined up when I graduated cosmetology school.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a hairstylist that specializes in color, specifically people with dark hair going blonde. I mostly do balayage transformations, highlights, and color corrections. I also enjoy fun colors, bleach outs, and doing other placements. I’m most proud of how I am constantly trying to improve and perfect my craft. I am always pursuing and investing in education and learning. I am actually chronically online, studying and learning new techniques because I am never satisfied. So I think that sets me apart the most from other stylists because even though I am very critical with myself, I put myself at a very high standard and strive to give my clients the best.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Humility. You will never BE the best or know everything. There will always be someone better. But that is not always what clients look for. They look for great results of course, but they also look for connection and safety. Safety to unwind and not worry about their hair, safety to express themselves, and safety to be their authentic self.
