Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Taylor.
Hi Shelby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had a passion for doing my own makeup. Whether it was a full face, Halloween, a new trend, I was doing it. Eventually in highschool my friends trusted me enough to their makeup for prom and other events. My parents convinced me to attend cosmetology school after graduation so I could pursue my passion and be in the beauty industry. While I enjoy doing hair and other services in the salon, makeup will always be my biggest passion and my bread and butter.
I love being able to help others feel beautiful while enhancing their natural features. This is why I chose to be a wedding MUA. My brand is all about enhancing someone’s face and features, adding a little pizzazz, but they are still themselves. I think this is especially important on someone’s big day, where they want to feel beautiful but comfortable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Anyone who has gone to cosmetology school knows that it is not fun and the experience can be rough. Unfortunately I let my school experience ruin my passion for what I love. This lasted a year or two before I felt I could come back and actually enjoy it. Looking back, I’m grateful that I took that break. I think that God gave me that break so I could come back with a bigger passion and heart for what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I offer professional hair and makeup services for weddings and events. My previous business name was Hair by Shelby Jo, but I am undergoing a rebranding. My business will now be called ST Artistry. My biggest service is makeup, from brides to bridesmaids to mothers of the bride/groom. I work with whatever look my client is wanting whether it’s bold, soft, natural, etc. My personal and client favorite is soft glam makeup looks.
I tailor each makeup look to that specific client. I look at eye shape, cheekbone structure, what product will work best depending on their skin type. Each client gets their own personalized look just for them.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I would love to branch out and travel across Texas or even the United States and be a travel HMUA! Currently I offer makeup for other events, not just weddings. It would be amazing to focus solely on weddings. Wherever God takes me, I will gladly go.
