Conversations with Shem Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shem Taylor

Shem, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in southern California. My parents were in the music industry all my life. Father was a hiphop artist from Chicago, my mom is a classically trained singer. So naturally I had a love for the creative world. I now make my own music, act, and model. It’s taken me all over the world! I love it, every second of it! I also grew up in a Christian home. So a lot of what I do and why I do it is based in my faith and love in Jesus! All I want to do is change the world one song at a time!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course not! If it was smooth…I would feel as if I wasn’t doing what I was meant to do! A calling without challenge isn’t a call worth answering. For me, the struggles came from lifestyle of always being on stage. Although I wouldn’t change my upbringing for anything. Every dream comes with a cost. I definitely battled with depression, self sabotage, and addiction. But the difficulty I experienced in my own life, never stoped me from chasing my dreams and goals. Because with God all things are possible. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be alive today to do this interview!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a traveling hiphop artist and actor. I also have my own podcast called Outlandish TV. I am mostly known for my music especially in the CHH (Christian Hiphop) space. One project I was apart of called “Worthy” was a song/music video that we made to raise awareness and money for babies with down syndrome. This was something I was extremely proud of! What sets me apart from most entertainers is that I love to bring quality art and an even more profound message. Through music and even some humor!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Well, Tha Mash Unit which is the collective I belong too. Is actually a family business, Complete ran be my family and I. No need for a fancy label if you have your family holding you down!
