Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Powell.
Taylor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My brother Blake and I have been touring musicians since 2009, and have seen and performed around the whole of America being in bands and backing up other artists. While being hired guns, we have also both. always written music on the side. In 2014, we both had opportunities playing music in different cities and decided to record an acoustic album for fun before parting ways. Recording that music was revolutionary to us, and led us both to turn down our other opportunities, and fully commit to making our own music and brand. What started as recording an acoustic album and playing in pizza shops and local dive bars, has led to a yearly schedule of 160+ concert dates across the country, playing every kind of venue from amphitheaters, concert halls, to stadiums. I am currently writing this from an Airbnb in Salt Lake City, where we are laying low for a few days on the tail end of a 3-month national tour. Our success has come from persistence, consistency, hard work, and building strong relationships.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
While we are unquestionably blessed, the road has not been smooth. Big examples of this would be in 2017, we were living outside of Houston when Hurricane Harvey washed through and flooded our house with 8 feet of water. Our business was still getting off the ground, so we would spend the weekends playing and keeping the business going, while we spent the weekdays tearing out the walls of our house, trying to save it. After 9 months of struggling, we moved on from the house to some farmland north of town.
Another example is back in March of this year, our father unexpectedly passed away. Along with normal wear and tear, vehicle breakdowns, the struggles of being away from family and friends for months at a time, and the constant battles of health; this career is a dream, but it comes at a high price.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a country/rock band, whose art is high energy and overall very optimistic. We believe in putting light into the world, especially at a moment in time with so much stress and difficulty. If you come to a concert, we want to whisk you away into a great time. For 90 minutes, we aim to create a memory, that you will want to return to. And the next time you come, we want to outdo said memory. We believe in, and strive for, consistent improvement. If you listen to a recordings, we aim for high-quality songs and high-quality writing. Again, we are eternal optimists. So you can count on uplifting, hopeful songs.
I believe what sets us apart from others is the people we surround ourselves with. We believe you are as good as the people you work with, and so we work with the best. Our team is second to none.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success means a million different things to me. When asked broadly like this, I feel you will get a different answer on any different day. Today, I am very focused on the art, so I would say success means connection. Whether it’s a someone hearing and connecting to a song, or a fan coming to a concert and being on the front row and us connecting to each other through the performance. It could be connecting to a new artist, and finding a new person with which we can be creative with, or a concert promoter with which we share a common vision with on how we can put on a great concert or event. I believe that connection is at the core of everything we do. If you connect, you will be successful.
