Today we’d like to introduce you to Tomika Jackson.
Hi Tomika, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing makeup two years ago when I cut my hair and was diagnosed with a rare skin condition named seborrheic dermatitis. I was very insecure about the patches, that started to form on my face so after a doctor’s visit, I researched day in and day out about different makeup products I could use to cover it. Makeup was not only therapeutic for me, but it was a skill that I could create my own individuality. I practiced so much to where I started to get clients that believed in me and could see me becoming a full-time Makeup Artist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. I struggled with constructive criticism really bad. I thought starting out that everybody would gravitate to me, because of my personality alone. I was wrong. I still strive to be different and bring diverse looks to the table, but’s it’s all about patience and time put in your craft.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a makeup artist. I specialize in enhancing women beauty. I strive to make my client feel seen and heard with my makeup expertise and countless hours of education. I’m proud to be a part of my client’s big day which may include a birthday, wedding, etc. I think what sets me apart is my personality, I make my client feel comfortable and I give the best hospitality when it comes to making my client feel at home when they sit in my chair. I give a welcoming environment to everyone I meet.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I give credit to my family, friends, Taye Hyder, and my clients that believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself. They trust me enough to let me practice my craft with no hesitation. Taye Hyder was a phenomenal teacher, she teaches upcoming makeup artists so effortlessly she deserve her flowers.
