Today we’d like to introduce you to Trevor Houston.
Trevor, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my sales career in the auto industry where I was the top performer 6 years in a row.
In pursuit of reaching a higher potential, I decided to take a leap of faith and move into the financial services industry where I hit the bottom quickly…. My first year was an emotional roller coaster learning not only sales but marketing.
See in the auto industry, I didn’t have to worry about where to get a new client. The dealership would pay for marketing on television, radio and internet to drive traffic into the dealership. All I had to do was show up & be the best at giving a presentation, negotiation and closing the deal.
But financial services was a whole new world. Through perseverance & determination, I soon made my way back up to the top of the leader board within my second year.
My success came from learning the art of giving first. I found a local group of job seekers who were struggling with getting seen. I decided to lean in and teach them different strategies for getting a decision makers attention and closing the deal, Job search sales and marketing 101, LinkedIn optimization & the art of closing the deal.
Through this time of giving I also decided to build my network with recruiters, career coach’s & subject experts and the Who Ya Know Job Networking Show was born, We are now around 4 years and 300 episodes of education, motivation and inspiration for job seekers to build community, support, encourage and pay if forward when they land a new job.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest struggles have been learning marketing strategies and working with my compliance department.
What I do is very outside the box in the financial services industry. This creates its own set of challenges. Financial services is already a highly regulated industry and we are constantly under the attack of changing, adapting of completely shutting down the way we operate as a business.
A lot of people don’t see the challenges we go through in order to be able to serve the job seeker community the way that we do while running our financial practice at the same time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love putting myself inside the shoes of a job seeker to learn how to solve their problems. I am always looking at it from a sales and marketing lens and figuring out how to get them seen by employers. I take a different approach from most coaches who only focus on resume, cover letters and keywords. I have never created a resume, it has always been through networking that I have landed. I am most proud of my job search trojan horse strategy that has helped thousands of job seekers close the deal and get back to their cash flow.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I am too busy in the creation of my own mobile app, podcast and blog to really focus on others at this time but I did recently take a LinkedIn marketing Bootcamp that changed my life by Shay Rowbottom.
