Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyra and Tiara Lewis.
Hi Tyra and Tiara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
We’ve always been musically inclined. Our first introduction to music was church choir around the age of 6, and we’ve been singing since. Re-runs of Showtime at the Apollo would air, and we would stand in front of the TV screen and reenact performances as if we would one day have an opportunity to perform in front of live audiences. Since then, we have. From high school choir and musicals to performing at venues and clubs around Dallas during college, we have definitely developed our showmanship as artists. We put out our debut album, Hollow Cherries, in 2021, and we are gearing up to put out our sophomore album, Don’t Forget Your Keys, this summer. We are definitely in love with this album, and we can’t wait for everyone to hear what’s been brewing for so long.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road definitely hasn’t been easy. It takes a lot of courage to pursue your passion as an artist, especially in today’s society, where we are all conditioned to feel that if we have not reached our goals in a certain timeframe, something’s wrong. We’ve been so close to signing to major labels and/or getting what we felt was our “big break,” and it is not panning out as we thought. That part of the journey is challenging, but perspective is key, timing is everything, and patience is a virtue. Through it all, we know who we are and the impact we have and will continue to have, and that’s why we stay focused. Additionally, not many people talk about this, but having a team is so important. From the very beginning, Tyra + Tiara has been managed and funded solely by us. As we are growing into bigger artists, we are slowly delegating the necessary tasks to others that have that industry knowledge and experience. It’s a running joke between us, but at some point, we have to let go of some control. So, selecting the right people to put in your camp can seem like a daunting task, but we feel it will be beneficial in the long run.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We have always said our music as a whole is eclectic, so defining our music into one genre would be difficult. However, we do lean towards an R&B sound with significant elements of rock, jazz, and country. In this upcoming album, the listener will be able to hear all of those sounds in the 12-track project, and they will definitely hear lots of layers and harmonies. I think we are most known for our soft angelic sounds and showcasing that on this project was important to us. We also bring a dynamic vocal range to some of our records, in particular when we vocal stack to mimic the large choral sounds. Our latest song, Rose, is a great example of that. We love being versatile, and our music is a representation of that.
What matters most to you?
Impact and legacy matter the most to us. We want our music to garner emotion from our listers and really make them feel something. Applying words to frequencies is extremely powerful, so the impact it will have on the consumer is great, and we don’t take that lightly. We want to inspire young women that hear our story to know that they are multidimensional and they can pursue a variety things in this lifetime. As aeronautical engineers and artists, we live out that possibility every day and that is what drives us to never stop going after our dreams. We hope others are inspire by us and never stop pursuing theirs, whatever that may be. We are the hope and dreams of our ancestors, and we would be remiss not to leave a legacy for the generations to come.
