Today we’d like to introduce you to Ursula Nunez
Ursula, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Steven’s journey into agriculture began with workshops designed specifically for veterans, planting the seeds that would grow into Mind Your Garden (MYG). In 2015, he attended Armed to Farm, a life-changing week-long agricultural training hosted by the National Center for Appropriate Technology. This pivotal experience set the course for his future endeavors. By December 2018, Steven had earned a master’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Texas at Arlington. His thesis, Addressing Issues Relating to Food Deserts Through Empowerment, explored creative solutions for addressing food insecurity in his own community.
Today, Steven and I have established a local food system in our backyard, just minutes from downtown Fort Worth. Through MYG, we transform discarded produce into nutrient-rich compost that nourishes our organic garden spaces. Produce is harvested and sold at our farm stand, and The Mindful Market, in East Fort Worth. Excess produce is supported by grants from Texas Health Resources and distributed to local food pantries. To further our mission, Steven and I also lead plant-based cooking demonstrations, working to empower our community to embrace healthy, sustainable food choices.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Our farming journey has taught us to embrace the rhythm of nature, adapting with patience, flexibility, and an open mind. Financial challenges have tested us, yet our faith has been our anchor. Through it all, we stand together—healthy, united, and steadfastly Christ-focused.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are deeply passionate about transforming the way people connect with the land and their food. Our work encompasses designing vibrant, sustainable landscapes, cultivating fresh, nutrient-dense produce, and inspiring others through interactive cooking demonstrations. Soon, we’re excited to expand our offerings to include high-quality, nutrient-rich compost, closing the loop in the cycle of sustainable living and empowering communities to thrive.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The greatest networking tip we can offer is to cultivate a relationship with the ultimate farmer—our Creator, God. In His wisdom and grace, He provides the seeds of connection, purpose, and growth that sustain us all. Volunteering at local farms also offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for sustainable living. Additionally, there are several programs available to help guide you through the food-growing process. Be sure to follow us on social media as we look forward to hosting farm classes soon—stay tuned for updates!
