Conversations with Vanilla Sugar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanilla Sugar.

Hi Vanilla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I fell in love with music at the age of four. I started singing and playing piano at that age, and later learned guitar, bass, trumpet, and French horn. Music became my passion and focus. Vanilla Sugar came to be and that has been my focus ever since!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel that every road has some occasional bumps. However, any bump or obstacle can be overcome. I feel that starting out as a young woman in a predominantly male scene was a little tough. People wouldn’t take me seriously, but I kept on. I know who I am and what I want to accomplish. There will always be a few people who don’t like what you’re doing or do not support you – don’t let these people under your skin. Continue to do what makes you feel happy and productive. A big challenge was getting out of my own head. I have a tendency to be kind of self-destructive when it comes to things I create. Part of my brain tells me it’s not good enough, the other says to stop being so hard on myself. I actually like the way the song sounds, so why do I have this weird self-doubt? It took years, but I am now at a point where I feel happy with things and have learned to not treat myself so badly mentally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a musician! I am so grateful to be able to tour around the world and have the amazing opportunity to play my heart out! My proudest moment was my album release show. I felt so much love in the room and the show was AWESOME. Everything was perfect from lights, and sound, to how the whole night went. So many months were spent in the studio and a lot of blood, sweat, and glitter went into the album…it felt so good to be able to share it with everyone that night together.

How do you define success?
I feel that I am successful when I set a goal for myself and accomplish it. I like to work in baby steps; small goals that lead up to a bigger goal.
