Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmeen.
Hi Yasmeen, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
As a little girl, I loved singing in the back of the car to my early 00s favorites like NSYNC, Britney, and Christina. It wasn’t until around 6th grade when I decided I wanted to try talent shows, and I realized how much I loved being on stage, singing. I did the whole show choir thing in high school and even joined a pop a cappella group in college. Singing was my passion; it was my escape from the difficult world of engineering which is what my education/background is in. It wasn’t until after I graduated college that I thought I could give original music a try, possibly form a band, and perform around the DFW area. I was able to turn that idea into a reality in less than a year. I released my debut album “Pure Bliss” last October, and now I have more new music on the way! This experience has been so exciting, and it’s led me to perform at some really amazing venues, including the House of Blues, The Free Man, Ruins, and more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Sometimes I joke and say that when my full-time job ends for the day, my 2nd job starts. Because it’s just me planning everything, managing myself can be overwhelming at times. I sometimes second guess myself and also question if what I’m doing is still fulfilling to me. But once I get past those hurdles and finally get to perform at the shows I book, those worries melt away, and I always have the time of my life on the stage.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I went to UTA for my bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering, and I work for a major defense contractor in Fort Worth. Alongside that, I’d like to consider myself a businesswoman when it comes to my music career. I manage, promote, and book myself when it comes to new music, social media, interviews, and booking shows. I’m still learning the ropes when it comes to both “jobs,” but I’m loving every minute of it. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to get this far in just a year. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the local DFW music scene, my friends and supporters, and my bandmates to be honest. I think what might set me apart from others is not just my music but my willingness and motivation. Once I commit to a new project, I put my full 110% into that project and continue to make goals.
What do you think about luck?
I have to say it’s “who you know” when it comes to great opportunities. I’ve been blessed to meet some incredible people in the DFW area who have been able to offer me opportunities I would’ve dreamed of. My good luck stems from the good people who have led me to where I am today. Some of the bad luck that I have experienced is that sometimes people will not have your best interests at heart. There will be people who don’t want to see you succeed without a legitimate reason. Even though I’ve been in the local music scene for a short amount of time, I think it’s crucial for us locals to support one another, especially other female musicians. There are not a lot of us female front men for bands, and it’s important to support one another and cheer each other on. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, but I try my best to cheer my fellow fem creators and artists at all times.
