Conversations with Youngjoo Jung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Youngjoo Jung.

Youngjoo, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea and I came to Dallas, Texas in 2017 as an engineering intern. I chose to come and experience a new country because I’ve always been drawn to new experiences and getting to know new people. Since I grew up in a very digital generation, I’ve always been passionate about making videos and taking pictures. When I moved to Dallas, everything felt extremely new to me as everything was so different from the life I knew in Korea. Language, people, culture, and food were all completely different scales. So, one of the first things that I started doing was posting pictures on Instagram and uploading videos on YouTube about my life in Dallas. That’s how everything started. Of course, I wasn’t exactly a pro at editing video, but I tried to stay consistent and continuously educate on editing my content. Shortly after a few months, I met new people and even collaborated with them on some of their brands such as vitaminbounty and sacheubeauty. All of a sudden, before I knew it, I ended up working as a digital content creator and photographer. To this day, I’m still trying to learn and hone my skills in videography and photography, and eventually, I’ll be able to call myself a pro.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting a whole new life in the US was definitely a very huge challenge for me. Having no one familiar here, created a huge barrier for me in terms of comfort and stability. Until I met my husband, I felt truly alone at times, having to deal with everything by myself. I mainly learned about independence as well as working on myself for myself. Along my journey towards independence, I had many hurdles that I had to face especially coming from a different background and a completely different place. Learning English was definitely one of the hardest aspects of living in the US that I had to face. Even though I had learned English in Korea, speaking with friends or speaking with coworkers in my office were completely different styles and vocabulary that I was extremely not used to. Certain words you couldn’t use in a professional setting, while others were completely OK with friends. It was all so confusing and one of those things where you have to integrate yourself to truly understand.

It was very scary and nerve-wracking to talk to native English speakers with my broken English, I constantly would think “What if I interpret wrong?” “What if I use the wrong word and they misunderstand me?”. I pushed through and kept trying, kept practicing kept talking, and kept making sure that eventually, I’d get more and more comfortable, and here I am! I’m very grateful to my husband and friends for supporting me throughout these tough times, pushing me to be the better version of myself that I wish to be.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I work as a digital content creator in an on-demand two-sided app platform called ‘ChoreCare’. ‘ChoreCare’ is an app platform that allows customers to access a range of cleaning companies and individual cleaners who will come to your home personally to clean. The app was created in order to create a more convenient space/platform for consumers to be able from anywhere to request a clean-up in their homes. Almost like Uber but for house cleaning. In the app, based on your personal requirements, you can pick the type of cleaning service you want. Users can compare cleaning prices, get an estimated cleaning time, show the number of cleaners, discover ratings and reviews, manage schedules, etc. Consumers will ultimately choose their best option through the platform having all these features to help them make the choice that fits them best. It’s an up-and-coming app that I believe would eventually become a must-have app for everyone. This type of app really benefits those who have tight schedules or wish to live a cleaner home but not enough energy to maintain that quality, this would really take pressure/stress off their shoulders and allow them to feel cleaner and more comfortable at home. I personally, know that I am that type where I don’t have much time to keep my home clean as I would like to, so this app really speaks to me. I’m very proud to be a part of this start-up since it’s something that I believe could become extremely big and where I could utilize my social media knowledge and video/photo editing skills to promote this service. Aside from my video/photo editing skills I personally love to socialize and meet new people as well as always love to listen to other’s opinions and take those into consideration which I feel is very important to be able to understand and take in maybe what consumers thoughts are on the services or what the company could improve on. I believe that because of my age and active involvement in social media, for a start-up like this I could really help them understand their consumer’s thoughts and opinions as well as convey to the company what this day and age look like realistically for this type of app to succeed. This app is for the people therefore should listen to the people.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Thinking about this question has reminded me of how lucky I am to have so many precious childhood memories. My favorite childhood memories were mostly of spending time with my older sister.

Every weekend, we used to explore new neighborhoods, mountains, restaurants, museums, theaters, parks.

There were always new things to try in Seoul, so my sister and I every weekend would make plans together no matter what.

No matter where we went, we’d take pictures for each other, walk along the streets together and the best of it all would be to eat new foods together.

I would go as far to say that sometimes the best parts of the exploring and hangouts we had would be when we had plans but would get lost.

Getting lost always opened new adventures and opportunities for us and really taught me that even if things don’t go according to plan something good will come out of it. These experiences are what have driven me and taught me to try any new thing as well as face all my challenges head-on as well as in general making me become a stronger person.
