Conversations with Zoe Huynh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zoe Huynh

Hi Zoe, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I initially started The Double Happiness Co. with the primary focus of preserving the beauty of the Vietnamese tea ceremony, an important part of our wedding traditions. In many Vietnamese families, especially with Asian parents, expressions of love don’t always come in the form of “I love you’s” or physical touch like hugging. It’s often a more subtle, unspoken kind of love. The tea ceremony is one of the rare moments where all those deep emotions come to the surface.

During the ceremony, I can see how profound the love between parents and children really is, revealed through the careful steps and traditions. The tea ceremony also offers us, as children, a chance to show our respect and gratitude for everything our parents have done—their hard work and sacrifices, which we often don’t express as openly in everyday life. It’s like, in that moment, they realize that their child has truly grown up and matured. Otherwise, they tend to think of us as their little kids forever!

Beyond the cultural significance, I wanted to share this tradition with Vietnamese American couples, particularly those who may not have grown up as connected to these customs. The tea ceremony creates such a meaningful connection between generations, and it’s beautiful to see how it brings families together in a way that honors both the past and the future.

After over a year of working with Vietnamese couples on their tea ceremonies, many of them asked me to style their Western wedding ceremonies and receptions as well. They appreciated that I understood both cultures—Vietnamese and American—and that my insights could help them navigate their big day. This inspired me to gradually expand into wedding decor and styling beyond just the tea ceremony, combining elements from both traditions in a meaningful way.

Recently, I’ve also started offering balloon decorations for milestone celebrations like birthday parties, gender reveals, baby showers, and graduations. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, and I’m thrilled to help people celebrate life’s special moments, no matter how big or small. While I’m not trying to take on everything at once, I’ve realized that every event, every milestone is worth celebrating, and I want to bring joy to those moments however I can.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any growing business, our small business has faced its share of challenges, but I view these as opportunities to educate clients and find new ways to better serve them. One of the main challenges has been helping clients understand the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes when planning and executing an event. Often, people don’t realize the level of detail and coordination involved, and my goal is to not only provide a service but also to offer emotional support during the process. Wedding planning can be incredibly stressful, and I’m here not just as a vendor, but also as a friend to guide them through it, reducing that stress and helping them enjoy the experience.

Another significant challenge as we continue to grow is managing our inventory storage. One of the strengths of The Double Happiness Co. is our extensive and diverse inventory, which allows couples to choose from a wide range of options to match their vision. However, maintaining this inventory comes with ongoing costs, such as storage fees, which remain constant whether or not we have events booked in a given month. It’s a delicate balance between offering our clients variety and managing the operational costs of the business.

While these challenges are real, I see them as part of the journey to continually improving our services. By maintaining a diverse inventory and investing in our team, I’m committed to ensuring our clients get the best possible experience. It’s important to me that my team is well-compensated so they can take care of their families too, and that adds to the cost of doing business. But at the end of the day, these challenges drive me to find creative solutions and provide even more value to our clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What are you most proud and what sets you apart from others?
What I’m most proud of at The Double Happiness Co. is our team. Each member brings their own strengths, and we’ve built a foundation of strong communication and collaboration, which allows us to serve our clients in the best possible way. I truly believe our team is God-given, and teamwork is essential to our business’s success.

At the heart of The Double Happiness Co. is kindness. We strive to create a creative, friendly, and non-judgmental environment where we foster real connections with our clients. Wedding and event planning can be stressful, so we want to be the team that not only delivers beautiful work but also supports our clients emotionally, making the process more enjoyable.

What brings me the most joy is seeing both my team and myself feeling fulfilled at the end of a hardworking day. I’m also incredibly grateful that my husband is part of this journey with me. Working together every day, sharing in both the joys and challenges of our business, has brought us even closer, and we both deeply understand the importance of what we do.

I also find happiness in seeing our clients love their decor and feel their best on their special day, without worrying about all the small details. We aim to ensure that they can be fully present and enjoy their moment.

Beyond our events, we try to stay involved with our community. Recently, we had the opportunity to create a backdrop for a “back to Sunday school” event, and it melted our hearts to see the excitement of all the kids returning to learn God’s word. It’s moments like these that remind us of our mission—to “double the happiness,” as God teaches in 1 Corinthians 16:14: “Do everything in love.” This principle of courage, strength and kindness guides everything we do, and we aim to spread that love to everyone we meet.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 pandemic had a profound effect on small businesses, and I truly admire the entrepreneurs who started during that time and have found great success, as well as the businesses that survived and came back stronger. The pandemic highlighted the toll it took on the event and wedding industries, but it also emphasized the importance of celebrations, milestones, and gatherings in normal times. These moments bring so much joy and can improve mental health by fostering connection, happiness, and unity. That’s when I knew I wanted to be a part of bringing people that happiness through my work in event decorating.

Unfortunately, during the pandemic, I lost my mom to breast cancer. While she didn’t pass away from Covid, the restrictions in healthcare during that time made it extremely difficult for me and my family, especially since my mom lived in Vietnam. I had to travel during the middle of the pandemic to visit her and follow the strict international quarantine guidelines. My mom was always the first person I wanted to call to share my achievements, big or small, as well as all the positive things and blessings that came my way each day. Losing her was devastating, and to be honest, there were times when I lost hope. But eventually, it also pushed me to find purpose and continue with the passions we shared together.

From a young age, my mom supported me in all things creative—whether it was drawing, baking, or arranging flowers. One of my fondest memories was when we won a florist competition as a mother-daughter duo when I was just 11 years old. I still miss her every day, and even now, my first instinct after a successful event is to call her and share pictures of my work, but I can’t anymore…

Though the pandemic was challenging, losing my mom during that time made it even harder. However, I know she would be so proud to see me using my creativity to bring happiness to others. Through my business, I feel like I’m honoring her legacy and continuing the lessons she taught me about the power of art, creativity, and the joy of bringing people together.
