Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Michael.
Hi Adam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My music journey began when I was around 15/16. Actually it began way earlier than that. Since I could remember music has been super important to me. My father played a lot of Michael Jackson, so I loved his music. My mother was more on the jazz, so Dave Koz & Kenny G also got a lot of play in the house. I remember making up songs on the fly in elementary school but never really thinking much of it. My mind just always wanted to convert whatever random words or things I saw into a song, and it still does today. Fast forward to me being a sophomore in high school, a shy kid, my friend/my brother Tev was having a house party for his birthday. A good amount of kids/classmates were attending. I was still pretty new to the school, so I felt out of place but I knew I was still going. The night of the party maybe a couples hours before Tev, my bro Armani, this guy named Marquise and I were just chilling at Tev’s house freestyling. We put on beats and just took turns flowing. I had never rapped, but it turned out i was pretty quick with coming up with lines. So a new talent was unlocked. The party started, I was glued to the wall, pretty much out of sight the whole night until… the DJ asked if anyone thought they could grace the mic. No one wanted to go, but Tev grabbed the mic and said “My boy Adam got it, he can freestyle, let’s get him on”. I’m thinking, he’s out of his damn mind, I could barely get off the wall to grab a drink due to anxiety and now he wants me to freestyle in front of all these people, my peers. I’m shaking my head no as he walks over to me. Somehow he gets everyone chanting my name, at this point I cant back down. So i grabbed the mic and freestyle. To everyone’s shock and my own, I was able to put something down. I started getting love from people there. After that night, music became even bigger to me. I’v written and recorded countless songs over the years. I’ve managed to come in contact with some dope artist from my city and they keep me inspired to get better with every song.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. The biggest struggle, which I still deal with and I’m sure anyone who creates can relate, is acceptance or the reception of what you make being liked and enjoyed by others. No one wants to hear something that they worked hard on and took time to make was no good or trash. I find myself holding on to songs for this reason. I get stuck in my own head thinking everything needs to be perfect or second guessing if I really did my best on a new track. I have to remind myself of the quote, “You can’t please all of the people, all of the time.” Some will like it and some won’t, but the effort I put in to writing and recording deserves to be heard by more than just my own ears.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I rap, I sing (I can hold a little note or two), I write, and I engineer (mixing and mastering). Writing is where I specialize, it’s something I know I’m good at, when I’m really focused. I’d like to think I have an explosive style of rapping, my voice carries. The thing that sets me apart from others is, I like to experiment in other genres and I love listening to other types of music to draw inspiration. In turn that helps my writing but also pushes me to then write in other genre styles. So sometimes that turns into me writing and singing ballads or more pop type of songs. So I can step out of rap and give you a whole RnB album. (I do have one of those, not yet released).
How do you define success?
Success is defined in how you feel. When you look back at what you’ve done, do you feel like you did it the right way? Is there any regrets? If the answers are yes and no, respectively, then I’d say that which your looking back at, was a success.
