Daily Inspiration: Meet Ali Hasoon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ali Hasoon.

Hi Ali, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Ali, and I am originally from Baghdad, Iraq. I came to Dallas, Texas when I was 13 years old. I attended high school in Richardson, Texas, and later studied at UTD, the University of Texas at Dallas. I studied photography, video production, and design, and graduated with a degree in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication. Shortly after, I quit my job as a pizza delivery driver and started my photography business.

It has now been six years since I started my company, Blue Whale Photography, and I truly love what I do. I capture people’s special moments and celebrations, solo and family portraits, professional career photos, and real estate photography.

I am also a family man. I am married and have a two year old child, and my business helps me support my family.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There is always a struggle in building something worthwhile, and the photography business is tricky because there are many elements to it. Some people think I just click my camera, upload the photos to a computer, and email them to the client, but that is an oversimplified and unfair way to look at it.

It was a struggle to afford the high quality equipment I use to capture my clients. It was a struggle, and a risk, to quit my job and start my business with zero clients. It was a struggle to sleep on the uncomfortable hospital couch when my son was born and then go shoot an event the very next day.

These are just a few of the struggles and bumps along the way, but I would do it all over again. Having my own business has given me freedom and allowed me to create the art I love while providing for my family. I am truly living the American dream.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an artist. I capture people’s special moments in a high quality and thoughtful manner, using my own unique style.

I use very high quality cameras and lenses, along with top tier photo editing software. From there, I crop each photo using photography principles, adjust colors to reflect the mood, remove distractions and unwanted crowds, and finish with texture, clarity, and sharpness adjustments.

I specialize in capturing candid, meaningful moments. I can freeze a moment where you felt something deeply and give you that memory to keep forever. You can return to that moment anytime or share it with others.

What sets me apart is that I truly do my best to satisfy my clients. I do not view this as just a job. I pour my soul into my art because I enjoy it and because I value my clients’ special moments. I take it seriously when someone trusts me with their memories, and I always go above and beyond to make the process smooth.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I think America is an amazing country that provides an abundance of opportunity. My advice is to seize those opportunities and start a business doing what you love. Even when it gets difficult, giving up is not an option. Keep pushing through it, embrace the journey, and live your dream.
