Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Adams.
Hi Andrew, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my love for photography while i attended high school in 2013. I found photography as a fun and creative outlet to express myself and had a natural eye for visual storytelling. My parents gifted me my first DSLR that year and I started to teach myself the ins-and-outs of using a professional camera and what goes into composing a photo. Once I graduated high school in 2015, I knew that I wanted my focus to be something related to photography as I entered into my college years.
I started my first semester of college at Collin Community College. The first photography course I enrolled in was a film photography and darkroom class. I always loved the look and feel of film and wanted to know more about the process of shooting on film, developing film, and creating prints of my work in the darkroom. I fell in love with it and carried that knowledge of film photography throughout the rest of my college life and to this day a decade later.
After two semesters at Collin College, I transferred over to Texas Tech University where I studied Communication in Media Industries and worked briefly for the Texas Tech newspaper called The Daily Toreador. I photographed all of the sporting events including the ESPN College Gameday at the United Supermarkets Arena in 2018. A year later, I took a spring semester photography course where I traveled throughout Texas shooting landscape photography for The Nature Conservancy. A month later, I continued my landscape and nature photography journey with a study abroad program to New Zealand where I traveled throughout the country photographing some of the most beautiful and breathtaking scenery I had ever seen.
Flash forward to today, and I have taken all of my knowledge and experience of photography and honed that into my new freelance portrait photography business Andrew Adams Photography. From engagements and maternity shoots, to family portraits and lifestyle portraits. My goal is to tell other people’s stories through the art of visual storytelling whether it be digital or film photography.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The main struggle for me along my photography journey has been making a name for myself and to stand out from the crowd. For awhile I could never quite nail down what I wanted my style to be and what made me unique as a photographer. I became my own worst critic and it only took me recently to figure out what my goals were and where I wanted to go as a photographer as well as appreciating my body of work and what I’ve produced over the last decade.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a freelance portrait photographer whose goal is to tell other people’s stories through the art of visual storytelling. I am most proud of my film photography and feel like that sets me apart from other photographers as well. I not only shoot on film mostly nowadays, but also develop and scan my own work here at home and have obtained quite a sizeable arsenal of various 35mm and medium format film cameras that I use on various photoshoots with clients.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as a photographer going beyond just technical skill. I believe its about impact, creativity and sustainability. Creating a unique voice and style that sets your work apart from others, building an engaged audience that connects with and values your work, establishing lasting relationships with clients, and staying true to your artistic vision I think are the keys to success.
