Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Hasselbusch.
Ashleigh, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began my career in the interior design industry right out of college, where I spent four and a half years working exclusively in residential design before transitioning into commercial design, where I’ve spent the last four years. Throughout the different roles I’ve held, one thing has always remained constant: my love for design and creativity.
As my career evolved, I realized how much I missed the personal side of designing residential spaces. When my husband and I purchased our first home, I was reminded just how naturally interior design comes to me, and how much I genuinely enjoy transforming a house into a space that feels personal and intentional. Eventually, I thought, why not bring that passion to homeowners in my own community?
I know so many people who feel overwhelmed or intimidated by interior design, and that has always bothered me because I believe the process should be exciting and enjoyable, not something you dread. I’m also incredibly passionate about how people experience the spaces around them. Whether we consciously realize it or not, our interiors influence our mood, our routines, and the way we feel in our homes. I believe a home should be a reflection of the people who live there; their personalities, interests and individual style, and that should be something they’re proud to showcase.
Ultimately, I started J&L Interiors because I wanted to bring the joy of good design to local homeowners and help them create spaces that feel distinctly their own: beautiful, personal, functional, and worth being proud of.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth process, but I would almost question it if it were, what would I be doing wrong if there weren’t challenges along the way? If you’re familiar with some of my previous publications, you may know that I’ve been open about marketing being an area where I’m continually learning and growing.
This summer, I took a hard look at my website and decided it needed a major facelift. There wasn’t necessarily anything wrong with it, but I realized it wasn’t creating the reaction I wanted from a potential client: “I need to work with Ashleigh.” I spent months revisiting and refining each page until I finally felt the overall experience truly reflected the level of design and service I want J&L Interiors to represent.
Building trust with a complete stranger has proven time and time again to be one of the more challenging parts of growing a business, but it’s also a challenge I’ve become much more comfortable navigating. I regularly reassess my marketing efforts, pay attention to what is and isn’t working, and make changes as needed. I don’t expect to have every aspect of running a business figured out at once, but I do believe there is tremendous value in being willing to evolve.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When it comes to my work, I have always taken great pride in what I create. I believe that anything I put into the world is a reflection of who I am and what I represent, and J&L Interiors is no exception. My goal is not only to create solid, thoughtful design, but to create spaces intentionally designed around the people who actually live in them.
I have clients who want to play it safe and keep everything neutral, while others want wallpaper with monkeys drinking wine, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with either. Part of my job as a designer is recognizing that a client hired me to guide them in the right direction while still putting something in front of them that they may not have considered on their own. I think presenting those slightly unexpected, sometimes off-the-wall ideas is also what continues to push me and allows me to grow as a designer. I definitely enjoy my courageous clients, but I equally enjoy guiding the ones who aren’t quite sure how far they’re willing to go.
One thing that sets my approach apart is that I don’t design around specific brands or push certain products onto my clients. Instead, I listen to how they need their space to function, what they’re drawn to, and how they practically live day to day, and I design around that. Some clients come to me with ten inspiration photos, while others give me just one. Give me one image that speaks to you and a sense of your personality, and off I go.
Ultimately, I don’t want someone to walk into a J&L Interiors project and immediately recognize my personal style. I want them to walk in and recognize the people who live there.
What are your plans for the future?
When I think about the future of J&L Interiors, I continually come back to growth. While I truly value the clients I have today, I want to continue expanding and bringing thoughtful, good design to more homes and homeowners throughout the community.
The majority of my current clients have recently purchased new-build homes, and I absolutely love the challenge of giving those spaces character, personality, and a sense that they’ve been thoughtfully collected over time. But as J&L grows, I would also love to reach the homeowners who have lived in their homes for decades and are finally ready to reimagine the spaces they’ve known for years. There is something really special about taking a familiar home and helping someone see new potential in it.
I also have such an admiration for the older homes throughout our local market. I see them come up for sale and immediately start imagining what I could do with them. I would love the challenge of working with character that already exists rather than always having to invent it—uncovering what makes an older home special, preserving the details that deserve to remain, and thoughtfully bringing it into the present without losing its original charm.
Whether it’s a brand-new house that needs a little soul, a home that has been loved for decades and is ready for its next chapter, or an older property with character waiting to be rediscovered, I want J&L Interiors to continue helping homeowners see just how much potential exists within the spaces they already call home.
