Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Rhodes.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started out making my own fishing lures. Carving them from balsa and basswood and pouring plastisol to make the fake worms. Bought a lathe one day to make poppers and walking lures, almost 3yrs later I’ve fallen headfirst into woodturning and never finished a fishing lure.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I can’t complain about journey with work itself. It’s been highly rewarding and a great creative outlet.
Finding the right customer and learning what people are willing to pay for has proven to be a challenge though.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Mostly woodturning and lathe work. I can’t tell you what sets me apart from other turners because they’re who I’ve learned from and I’m still fairly new to this. As far as what I’m most proud of I would have to say the different styles and shapes I’ve learned in a relatively short time.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’m self-taught. All YouTube, trial, and error. Never taken a class or had a mentor/apprenticeship.
