Daily Inspiration: Meet Bree Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Jones.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It all started as I was thumbing through my baby book one day; I saw a picture of myself at around age five with an apron on and a spatula in my hand. Looking back, I realized that I spent a lot of my childhood in the kitchen, watching my mom bake and decorate cakes. I’d help scrape the batter into the pans before baking – and my favorite part, of course, was helping to lick the bowl when she was done.   My mom invited me to join her at a cake decorating class one day. After honing some basic skills, I began helping her decorate the cakes she baked for family and friends. Once I became a mom, I took a leap of faith and jumped into the baking business full time. What started out as a fun mother-daughter outing blossomed into a passion for creating edible works of art. Since the beginning of my journey, I have been featured in Voyage Dallas Magazine as a hidden gem bakery in the Frisco area. I’ve also been featured in the book ‘How to Cake It,’ created by the massively popular YouTube sensation Yolanda Gampp. From here, I look forward to growing and experiencing all the new opportunities my cakes and cookies will bring!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Baking hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Relocating to Texas was a pretty difficult move because I had to build a clientele from scratch. Covid was also pretty tough because, of course, people weren’t having parties or get-togethers. Even since the peak of Covid, a lot of people downsize their party sizes, and that hurts my business a lot because I’m either doing orders that are really small, or the orders are becoming less frequent due to budget and party sizes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a custom cake artist that focuses on the details, and I pride myself on having cakes and cookies that look and taste good – because that is so important. I’m most proud of my ability to do novelty cakes. Characters, themed, out of the box – whatever idea people have, I love to be challenged and I love to come up with new ideas when I get that go-ahead to use my creative freedom. I think what sets me apart is that I love fun cakes. I do weddings, I do simple, but the most fun is when people have big ideas that go with a theme because I can really let my creativity shine. If you take a look at any of my novelty cakes, you’ll see that the details matter the most to me. Textures, shading, the exact colors, I’ve even done music playing from a functioning game controller – whatever it is, I guarantee I’ve thought of it and included it on the cake!

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
That it’s just me behind the scenes. I’m sending invoices, shopping, baking, decorating, delivering, and cleaning up all by myself. It gets tiring, for sure!
