Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Clifton.
Hi Brent, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got started in concert photography back in 2021 when I got my first camera with my stimulus check. I was going into bars and venues around the city with a Nikon D3500, a kit lens, and a dream. I spent the next few years honing in on my craft. I developed a style, really worked on photo composition, and used every gig as growth. Fast forward to today and I offfer both photography and video work to bands and artists including live shows, promos, and BTS work.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road has been a work in progress with it getting smoother over time. In a way, it almost feels like I started off with a dirt trail and built my own functioning road. In photography, I feel it’s all about the reps and networking. When I started in 2021, I barely knew anyone in Dallas because I had moved here the year before from Alabama. I also was using a pro level camera for the first time. The road to start off was bumpy but it’s been a work in progress over the years.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a concert photographer and marketing coordinator. I currently am the marketing coordinator at Three Links/No One Productions in Deep Ellum. Out of the two, I’m mostly known for being a photographer. It’s because I always have my camera at any show I go to whether it’s at Three Links, Trees, Club Dada, Puzzles, RBC, etc.
I am most proud of getting back into music when it felt nearly impossible to get back into just a couple of years ago. I had intended at music venues in college, but I was virtually out of the music scene around 2020 even before the pandemic had hit hard. I want my story of resiliency and never giving up to inspire others to keep chasing after their dreams no matter the age.
I believe what sets me apart from others is the desire to keep showing up. So many people seem to get burnt out after years of going to shows or doing photography (and rightfully so.)
I always told myself that I was going to be involved in music in some way, shape or form. As a kid, I never knew if it was going to be on a stage or behind the scenes. I am really fortunate to be where I am at today. I thank a lot of it to just showing up and never throwing in the towel.
I think another thing that sets me apart is just the ability to adapt. I shoot for a band called Nygma. I used my meta glasses to film a recap of their entire Emo Nite set since pro equipment isn’t allowed. I’m always asking “how can I pull this off?” even when it seems impossible.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
This might be cheating because it’s technically 2 answers, but I really love the people and the skyline.
When I got my first camera in 2021, I really wanted to do cityscape photography because of the skyline. I loved seeing the Bank of America Plaza and Reunion Tower light up at night. It’s also one of the reasons I moved here. I remember visiting before moving and just falling in love with all of the colors in the skyline at night.
I also love the people. I met my partner here. I have also met some of my best friends and favorite bands here. We have one of the best music scenes in the country with so many great bands and venues. I love the music scene here especially.
What I like least about the city is the traffic. Since moving here, I have been in at least 5 accidents with 2 being major. I had a car I drove all through 7 other states and it somehow gets totaled in Dallas of all places after only living here for 1 and a half years.
