Daily Inspiration: Meet Britteny Garibay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Britteny Garibay.

Hi Britteny, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After college my husband and I took what little savings we had and used it to put a down payment on a small 888 sqft house in Polytechnic Fort Worth. It wasn’t much but I felt like it had potential. I grew up watching HGTV and always wanted to flip a house so I figured this could be a fun project. We didn’t have a lot of money so everything but the foundation we did ourselves. My neighbor would watch me work on the house all the time and asked me what I was doing. I told her I planned on flipping and selling it. She had seen the house before and thought I was crazy. About a year later when all the designing and decorating was done I invited her over to see. When she stepped inside she was stunned and said I should ask for more than what I was thinking. I loved working on the house and received such good feedback from everyone who saw it I thought maybe I could start my own interior design business. With no training or team I decided to go for it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been almost 3 years now since I started my own interior design business and there’s been a lot of learning along the way. I did go to college, but I did not get a degree in interior design because of that I’ve had to learn a lot of things the hard way when it comes to running a business. Sometimes at the beginning I would under sell my services or even lose money just trying to get a client. You learn to value yourself and the skills that you have and know what you’re worth. When you start following a dream and start your own business, sometimes you don’t take into account all the different elements to go into that business. Since it’s just me running my business right now I have to wear a bunch of different hats. I have to be a content creator, manager, marketer, and a designer all in one. Sometimes I’d go months without any business because I didn’t know how to market myself and get clients on my own. When you go months without any business, you really start to question if you’re actually good at what you do or if you were a one hit wonder. At times like those I have to look back on my work and remind myself that I am good at what I do but success takes time It doesn’t happen overnight.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an interior designer and I run Juniper Design Studio. Our style is timeless and traditional with a hint of modern to always give you that warm homey feeling while keeping things fresh. To achieve this, we focus on three main areas, organization, decorating, and design. What makes Juniper Design Studio so special is I’m also an artist. I went to school for painting and sculpture and I love to work with design clients to incorporate unique one of a kind pieces into their space.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Showing up. Don’t ever think an opportunity is too small and don’t get intimidated because something seems too advanced. You can learn something in all experiences even if you come across looking silly. But also show up for people. Not everything has to be a business advantage. A lot of the business I’ve received has been word of mouth from just trying to help people.
