Today we’d like to introduce you to Caleb B.
Hi Caleb, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey, Ya’ll.. Thanks so much for this opportunity.. My name is Caleb Brown, born and raised in Dallas,Tx. An alumni of North Garland HS, where I initially was interested in creating a career in the performing arts. Dance, cheerleading, and music were my first love. However, while still in high school from designing cheer uniforms and creating game-day looks, I discovered my talent for styling and infatuation with fashion. So that journey after high school led me into high-end retail stores such as Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Bebe. Where I was able to work hands-on with the public who were shopping for all types of occasions. It was also challenging because the “everyday person” weren’t like fashion models, where you could put on or experiment with any type of look, those customers wanted detailed and specific looks. Then some had no clue, therefore had to put my skills to work. So, they kept coming back for more of my style education. Not only am I able to provide dynamic looks for clients, but I also specialize in getting them the best looks that would last a lifetime. My experience has allowed me to consult on affordable style practices and how to shop on a budget.
While working at Bebe, I ran into Krave Magazine’s CEO and publisher Will Young along with Master Photographer Eric Ganison who pushed and encouraged me into editorial styling, also giving me a chance on shoots. Working as a retail stylist and publication stylist are totally different jobs. I was so timid and scared. But I figured it out. As time went by inspired by my “Bible” of VOGUE and GQ Magazine, I was able to understand my craft more, travel, and get mentored hands-on about my passion from well-known powerhouse stylists, Dallas’ J. Bolin and working alongside celebrity stylist and Kontrol Magazine CEO/editor Julian Lark from Atlanta, Ga. without those great men in fashion I would be lost. So, I’m thankful for every person and opportunity.
Eventually, I gained the opportunity of a lifetime, allowing me to work as a backstage stylist during Dallas’ Men Fashion Week in 2015. returning the following year as a lead stylist. From there I was able to leverage my expertise to create looks for some of the most talented celebrities including Kelly Clarkston, actress Erica Ash, Olympic gymnast Donnell Whittenburg, Tyler Perry’s hit show SISTAS actor Trinity Whiteside, Starz TV P-Valley and Ruthless star Blue Kimble, Ex NFL player/actor Thomas Q. Jones, Blac Chyna and also styled NFL Oakland Raiders baller WR Brandon LaFell for the cover of Krave Magazine Sports Issue and a host of other influential people.
As Krave Magazine’s Chief Style Editor, my work can be seen in notable publications including APEEL Magazine, Kontrol Magazine, Krave Magazine, also in Rare Magazine in New York.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, I would love to say it has been a smooth road. lol… but this road will always be a learning experience for anyone in this field. At times improvising will be needed. Some only see the glamour of being a stylist. Getting the chance to shop, pull clothing, be on a photo shoot or film set, taking red carpet or event pictures but working with challenges, such as difficult clients, designers not returning emails/calls, canceling at the last minute, or coming across situations out of your control will test your capabilities and strength. We have to be aware of the conversations we are having with ourselves about our talents and gifts. “Is this for me?”
But my faith in God and small circle of friends have grounded me and kept me sane. Letting go of my attachments and releasing my expectations has been a lesson learned. I’m afraid of the negative outcome. so, I stay positive, keep a clear mindset to see things for the good. So I can assure myself that ”My dreams CAN become my reality.”
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Caleb’s Kloset is my brand and umbrella as a creative wardrobe stylist. I specialize in both editorial publication and personal styling. Starting from the retail world, I understand and ask what customers look for while shopping. A DEAL!!! While others are looking for the hottest new look, so my job is to create those looks based on your budget while giving my style consultations.
For example, colors that compliment your skin, hair, eyes, styles, and fits that compliment our body type, things that we don’t think about while shopping. Even though customers may like the color shades of yellow, red, peach, powder blue, mom jeans, wide-leg pants, peasant-style dresses, or European fitted suits. Those styles and colors aren’t flattering on everyone, and you have to be ok with an expert relaying the truth. I feel it’s my job as a style expert to give you those memorable tips to make you look stunning that most sales people would be too shy or embarrassed to share while making a purchase because if not…it will be returned to the store. So, I strive for excellent results and a returning customer.
As for Editorial styling, getting the chance to connect with designers, models, talented makeup artists and photographers creating the newest hot topics of fashion is an awesome feeling knowing that you as a stylist have inspired someone to be drawn into your world, so that they may go on to create looks that started from your blueprint. Or people who take your style advice and with that, you have changed their entire world by introducing to them something new now they love.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m a Cancer so, I’m all over the place (in a good way) the boy next door type, So I love to have fun, being around other creatives, but I also take care of business first. I’m direct and open-minded at the same time. I’m that one friend who will give tough love but, sensitive at the same time. Again, all over the place…lol. So, me staying true to myself, my brand, aiming for success and everything that has been instilled in me has gotten me so far in my journey. Don’t limit yourself because you don’t know the right people or think you are in the wrong location. Stay focused on the main goal, and the right doors or window will open.
