Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Carter.
Hi Cameron, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Cameron Carter, I’m 28 years old, and I recently just graduated with a B.A. in Liberal Arts focusing on acting from the University of North Texas. When I was young, I always thought I was going to play ball when I grow up, but I later realized that wasn’t going to happen for me because I didn’t have the passion for it as I do for acting. My dream/goal in life now is to become a successful actor, such as my mentor Will Smith. I started performing around the same time I was playing basketball (6 years old). That consists of dancing, stepping, miming, and acting. I began dancing first because I am a big fan of, wait for it… Michael Jackson! I know typical right, but I didn’t realize how fun, entertaining/fun acting was until I started watching Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. After that, I got into movies like crazy and it didn’t matter what type of movie it was. From action to comedy, to romance and horror, I was all in! I’m not like most theatre kids because I do more than just want to act and talk about the art. My family are huge sports and music fans. So, it makes sense that I would be one as well. Sports and music are a big part of my life; with that being said I am a die-hard Mavericks and Cowboys fan! I am very proud of who I’m becoming to be. My family backs me up 100% on everything I do. I am now signed to a major agency (Page Parkes Agency) to help further my career, which also allowed me to have the opportunity to be cast as a principal role for a national Coca-Cola commercial. When I’m not acting, I’m also a teacher. I teach Character Education to help kids understand how to be respectful, honest, responsible and etc. I have raised in old school, and the main thing my parents taught me when I was young was respectfulness because that can also help you get far with people than a college degree. One more thing about me is that I’m a big-time superhero fan!!! Hands down, Spider-Man is my all-time favorite hero. So best believe me when I say, one day…I will be in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe)!
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything you want to do in life is going to have its challenges and struggles. I didn’t know anything about the industry. I didn’t know how to get discovered or where to even begin. I thought doing school plays, or even local plays was the key to getting in…and it’s not. Not saying it might not happen that way for someone else, but realistically speaking, it’s not. I had to go through acting classes, audition for an agency, and pray that it was all going to happen. When I signed with Page Parkes Agency and was assigned to my first agent, that’s when it was time for me to do my thing. My agent will give me an opportunity, but I have to nail it. That’s when heartbreaks and doubts come into place. Getting rejected or not getting callbacks sucks, and when it happens over and over and over again, you can’t help but think about giving up on the dream. It’s up to you to keep that fire you have for that dream and keep pushing.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an adapter, which means I can pretty much do or be anything in any type of environment/setting. I’ve practiced a lot of what I call “shadow acting.” It’s similar to shadow boxing when you’re basically fighting with yourself. I like to act out different scenes where I’m the performer but yet feel/see what an audience is viewing. If I can’t feel an emotion of a character I’m portraying as I’m acting it out, then I know the audience won’t relate to or feel anything for that character. Another thing I enjoy doing is imitating certain actors. Will Smith, Denzel Washington, Martin Lawerence, Robert Downey J.r, Tom Hanks, and Michael B.Jordan are my to go to. Their range in performances is incredible, so my goal is to perform on that status but give it my own performance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t call it luck; I simply call it a blessing. My family is the biggest blessing one could ever imagine. Them being by my side, and encouraging me is what keeps me from not drowning in terms of speaking. That’s from my parents, my sister, my grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and close friends.
