Daily Inspiration: Meet Cameron Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Taylor.

Cameron Taylor

Cameron, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I feel very fortunate that I come from a family of musicians. My mom is a singer; my stepfather is a jazz piano player, my other stepfather plays guitar, flute, sax, etc., my uncle plays a multitude of instruments and is a record producer. My father was a piano player and guitar player who gave me my first guitar then tried to talk me out of being in a band. So, not only was music everywhere sonically but I was also exposed to the gig life at a very young age. I’m a very patient person, and I wonder if that’s partly because I was sitting through 5 sets of my parents’ gigs when I was 5 years old.

I think the first album I ever asked for was probably by “Weird Al,” who I think is brilliant, btw, but once I got serious about music, it became an obsession. I would agonize over lyrics, chords, harmonies, who produced it, who are the guests, what are they talking about, much to the annoyance of many of my friends who “liked” music but didn’t live it. So as time went on, I began to find like-minded people who were obsessed with it as much as I was and still am.

Very much like most bands in DFW, our sights were on Deep Ellum. When we began not only was there no bottle service, but there were still plenty of places to play as it was still very much about art creativity, and there was an edge to it that was appealing and intimidating at the same time. We climbed our way from the Wednesday night prove yourself gig to the less difficult Thursday night, and so on, and eventually graduating to playing the Curtain Club (RIP) and Trees stages countless times. We knew, however, that wasn’t enough, and our new album, Humans Are Scary, is the culmination of a year and a half of writing, recording, and promoting. Our sights are set pretty high, and we are very excited for the what’s to come.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh yeah, every day has been great! Ha! No, it has not been easy, and why should it be? There have been several member changes over the years. This gets harder to do as people get older. Priorities shift, the grind can get to you, and not to mention the hours you have to keep while also attempting to maintain some sense of normalcy… I’ve seen many of my friends and peers hang it up, and that’s totally fine, but I still have that drive and that fire that keeps me going. I still get inspired and have things to say lyrically and musically. If that ever disappears, I’ll know it’s time to join those same friends and peers in “retirement,” but until then…

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I began on guitar, and I’ll admit I’m very average when it comes to technical ability. I moved to vocals, and I’ve been told I have a very, “ahem,” unique voice. I can’t really play piano, but I can create piano parts, drum loops, synth lines, soundscapes, and actually co-created many of those sounds you hear in our music. All that to say, my specialty is songwriting. I can’t necessarily “shred” on guitar, but I can create a song from one end to the other that did not exist before, and it is my absolute favorite thing to do. By the way, every song I’ve ever written is the best one since the last one and until the next one. Ha!

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think it’s originality, which has definitely been an uphill battle and a slower burn. I think it’s much easier to stay safe and do what others are doing. I find that to be very unfulfilling. I’d much rather be love or hated than ignored or elicit a response like, “Meh.” I feel like there’s a subtle shift happening, and people beyond our immediate fan base are starting to discover us, and it feels great. I don’t know what we sound like. I know what I think, but that may vary extremely from the majority. Whatever it is, I love it.
