Daily Inspiration: Meet Canon Herring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Canon Herring

Hi Canon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Music has always been a big part of my life. I grew up playing and composing classical piano music as a hobby. Although I had not discovered my calling and passion for film music yet, I had always loved listening to the soundtracks of films I would watch. My senior year of high school, I realized my desire to use my compositional gift to strengthen and build the emotions of films. Instead of pursuing further musical education, I decided to gain the industry experience to build a career early. I put to work, the work ethics my upbringing had instilled into me and started chasing a dream. Although it started off slow, I consistently put in the necessary effort to build working relationships and get small jobs to practice my craft. From there, I grew my work portfolio which aided to my efforts in reaching out to new clients. Now, I score film and compose for many different clients and have opportunities I would have never dreamed of.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The biggest challenge or struggle in my professional journey was balancing the disappointments of my hope being differed. As creatives we often have a goal we set our minds to, and one of the most difficult emotions to face is the disappointment when those things might not happen. The biggest struggle for me was pushing past the disappointment and continuing to chase my dream with confidence and strength. When the path gets difficult or we run into a set back, it is our responsibility to push through those things and finish the race strong. I can never blame my own failure as a result of my circumstances, rather a should learn what I can from my mistakes and get back on the horse. This was the hardest lesson for me to learn.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a film composer my job consists of composing, producing, editing, mixing and mastering film music from start to finish. When a client hires me, I work closely with them to make sure the emotions of the film are uplifted with the right kind of music. I specialize in orchestral/cinematic music with instrumentations anywhere from piano and cello, to synthesizers and electric guitars. What sets me apart is my desire to step out of the grid of modern cinematic music, and make something truly unique. When I’m hired for a project, I want it ti have a sounds that sets it apart from anything else.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If you are just starting out in your creative journey, my advice would be to walk in humility. You might be great at your craft and qualities for a project, but if learning new things and being willing to grow is not a priority, success will never find you. Be willing to accept correction, advice, collaboration, and comments that, although hard to receive, are necessary for your growth. My lack of receiving correction earlier on in my career caused limitation to my success and stunted my growth. Be open to change and be open to grow.
