Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Johnson & Melanie Guerra.
Hi Caroline Johnson &, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Caleidos began quietly, in Dr. Caroline’s backyard, with a simple yet brave intention: to reimagine what education could feel like when rooted in care. As a psychologist and mother, she was searching for something more than academics—a space where children are seen, felt, and honored as whole beings. A space where connection mattered as much as curriculum.
At the same time, Melanie was living on the Big Island of Hawai‘i. With two decades of experience across classrooms, cultures, and caregiving roles, she had seen the limits of conventional education—how often it missed the child’s inner world, their rhythm, their creativity. She, too, longed to help build something that could hold the full depth of learning.
When our paths met, it felt less like a decision and more like a remembering. Together, we began imagining a place where learning grows from relationship, where wonder is welcome, and where emotional safety is seen as foundational, not extra.
Caleidos was never just a school. It was, from the beginning, a living question—a space for practicing, observing, and evolving new ways of learning. Today, it continues to grow as an educational research lab, a bilingual, nature-rooted learning community where children, families, and guides walk alongside one another in curiosity and care.
What began in a backyard has become a movement—one that invites us to slow down, listen deeply, and rebuild the architecture of education from the inside out.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road to creating Caleidos has been full of meaning, but far from smooth —but it has been honest, alive, and deeply profound. As an educational research lab, we are constantly in the practice of learning, evolving, and adapting. There’s no script to follow, no final version to arrive at. What we’re doing is alive, and like all living things, it changes. It listens. It grows.
One of the most tender challenges has been choosing presence over performance. In a world that often rushes toward outcomes, we are learning to trust in slower rhythms—ones that center relationship, repair, and emotional well-being. That isn’t always easy. It takes courage to hold space for grief, confusion, or conflict and to believe that these moments, too, are part of the learning.
We’ve also had to unlearn much of what was taught to us—about control, about success, about what it means to educate. And in its place, we’re learning again, alongside the children, how to lead with love, how to hold complexity, and how to stay true to our values even when the path feels uncertain.
Of course, there have been practical struggles too—zoning, resources, long days, and aching hearts. But what sustains us is community. What teaches us is the process itself. The challenges are not detours from the work. They are the work.
Caleidos continues to be a practice of deep listening. A place where we remember that building something new—something rooted in care, in wholeness, and in trust—is never easy. But it is always worth it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Caleidos, we weave together neuroscience, educational philosophy, and nature-based learning to support the full development of the child — mind, body, heart, and spirit. Located in Oak Cliff, Dallas, our bilingual community is rooted in relationship. We believe learning begins with safety, trust, and presence.
Our approach is grounded in psychology and the science of how children grow and thrive. What makes us unique is that we don’t just apply existing models — we’re developing our own living philosophy through real-time practice with children, families, and guides. Caleidos is both a learning community and an educational research lab, constantly evolving in response to what is most alive and needed.
We specialize in holistic, relational education that honors the whole child and invites curiosity, creativity, and connection to the Earth.
What we’re most proud of is not just what we’ve built — but how. With care, community, and a deep commitment to values that center humanity and healing.
If you’re reimagining what education can be, we’d love to be in conversation.

What makes you happy?
What makes us happy is witnessing the quiet, everyday magic of Caleidos — the kind that’s hard to put into words but easy to feel.
It’s in the way children thrive when they are truly seen and supported. In the shift that happens when we move from a compliance-based model to one rooted in relationship, trust, and curiosity. It’s in families who feel held, in educators who rediscover joy in their craft, and in the deep experiences of repair and transformation that unfold when we prioritize connection over control.
We are constantly amazed by the creative expansion that happens when children follow their interests. The projects they dream up, the questions they ask, the ways they collaborate — these are not only educational moments, they’re glimpses into the kind of world we want to live in.
And then there are the moments that take our breath away: when a parent tears up while hearing our story because they’ve been longing for this kind of space. When someone says, “I didn’t know education could feel like this.” When a teacher, burned out by systems that didn’t see them, steps into Caleidos and remembers why they started.
It fills us with joy to welcome those who arrive with a desire for something different — for something more whole, more real, more alive. Caleidos was born from a call for a more human, rich, cutting-edge approach to education — one rooted in community, nature, and wholeness. The support we’ve received from kindred spirits reminds us that this vision is shared, and that we are not alone in this dream.
We’re happiest when learning feels like life itself — full of wonder, complexity, presence, and possibility. Caleidos is where we get to live that truth, together.
