Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawn Blasingame
Hi Dawn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So my story is that of a caregiver. My husband was diabetic and got really sick. Ended up more severe than we thought. For 7 years I took care of him while balancing a full time job, part time job and a son in High School. During the time of his care, I started journaling our journey, and it became a book. I learned the good, bad, and ugly of healthcare, and insurance. I learned to find my voice, advocate for my husband and balance my life. Basically I “made it happen”.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Rough road all the way. Challenging path of new information, lack of communication, one hand not knowing what the other was doing. I fought to be heard. Trying to be at a hospital or clinic, a school function, and get my 40 hours of work on. And then stay connected to friends, family and church
Feed the dog. Feed the kid. Be everyone’s only one. Sleep and time were not on my side.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now I work for a Chiropractor who is also a Holistic Practitioner. I am a retired probation officer, which is what I was doing when my husband became ill. I am working on starting my own Caregiver ministry and working on becoming a Speaker for Caregiver issues. I published a book last year. One goal down! I think working on new goals and reaching beyond my limits is exciting
The new me! Reinventing myself while helping others. I offer caregiver experience and perspective in a “no fluff” zone. Telling it like it is.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is putting yourself out there. Be willing to be vulnerable and peel back the veil. Show people what you really know.. sharing experiences helps people grow. Gives them support.
I put myself out there by publishing my book. The most raw moments of my life. I grew up in a small New England town. I moved to a rural part of Oklahoma to go to college, then moved to the city to work. Things are very different in a city and New England way of life is more private. At least how I grew up. Putting my story out there has been momentous for me. Opening up a private part of my life for everyone, in hopes of reaching and helping someone along the way.
