Daily Inspiration: Meet Derrick Ferguson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Ferguson.

Derrick Ferguson

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I went to Sam Houston High School in Arlington, TX, but ended up receiving my GED in Arizona in order for me to play college football. I ended up Graduating at Langston University. Like most athletes, I had no idea what I wanted to do in life after college despite getting my degree in behavioral science. Upon graduating, I worked for a dispatch center, making 10.50 an hour, and was a 1099 employee. I had a close friend who sold cars and showed me his check, and a week later, I began selling cars. I sold cars for 6 years. Was one of the top car salesmen in the DFW metroplex, and was #1 in sales for my company. Before selling cars, I wanted to enter real estate, but I felt like if I wanted to make some money right now car sales would be the way to go. Quitting selling cars wasn’t easy, though; when you’ve built a client base for years, it’s hard to just start over. At the end of the year 2022, when everything was opening back up from COVID-19, I decided to finally take my courses seriously online and finish up. I deactivated all of my social media and deleted the apps for 3 months until I was finally licensed. After being licensed I kept selling cars for the remainder of 2022 and decided to take a leap of faith into real estate come 2023.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In the beginning, it was rough, but I can’t say I didn’t expect it. Everything usually takes time with sales patience is important. Luckily, I’ve been through what it’s like transitioning with car sales. I didn’t start where I ended up finishing. I had months making 25k, sometimes on average about 10-13k a month. The struggle usually comes from finding a target audience, and then once you find the audience, it’s finding a way to reach those people. Then, building trust as a realtor with the market being so competitive with all of these great agents in the DFW. Separating yourself as to what’s makes you different

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I work in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex as a licensed realtor. I’m specialized as a listing agent listing homes/condos for sale and working with buyers who are looking to relocate from different states into the DFW area. I’m known for being someone who will go over and beyond for my clients and servicing each individual tailored to the client’s needs. I’m proud of myself for establishing success in the sales field because sales is no easy task. I believe what sets me apart is that I only do things with passion. To be great at something you have to have a passion to do it. And no only am I a person who works to their strength, but I recognize my weaknesses in areas to be able to correct as well.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, taking risk is the only way to elevate to me. Without any risk, I feel like there’s no lesson or growth. Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win. I took a major risk leaving the car business to get into real estate, and it’s starting to pay off. I’m No stranger to risk even in car sales I use to waste a lot of money on ads and would never get a bite and then I finally made a good ad, and I would spend $200 a week to advertise. I knew that I would have to convert those leads in order for it to make sense.
