Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Shumonte Cooper
Hi Dr. Shumonte , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Christ is Relief in 2018 in Georgia, aiming to aid those impacted by natural disasters. Initially, I faced significant hurdles in securing aid and assembling a dedicated team. However, with the support of knowledgeable individuals in the non-profit sector, I navigated those early challenges. Our team eventually formed effectively, despite some growing pains. Our mission to serve those in need has always been at the forefront. Today, we have relocated our headquarters to Texas and are looking to engage fully in the surrounding communities, particularly in tornado response and other natural disasters. Our team now covers over seven states, and we look forward to bringing our expertise to the wonderful state of Texas.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting Christ is Relief hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the major challenges we faced early on was securing adequate funding. Building a committed team was another significant hurdle. Many people were enthusiastic about the cause but finding those who were truly dedicated to the vision required time and effort.
However, through perseverance and the support of knowledgeable individuals in the non-profit sector, we have been able to overcome these obstacles. Today, I am proud to say that we have a solid team of dedicated individuals and over 30 sponsors who believe in our mission. Their support has been instrumental in helping us continue to serve those in need effectively.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’d love to share more about the vital work we do at Christ is Relief. We are a 501(c)(3) organization specializing in natural disaster response. Our mission is to bring aid to those impacted by both natural and man-made disasters. We are known for “Bringing Hope in the Midst of the Storm.” Our team is equipped to respond to most disasters within 48 hours, providing essential supplies for recovery, meals, and, if necessary, aiding in search and rescue operations.
What I am most proud of is the lives we have been able to touch and the positive feedback we receive from those we help. It’s incredibly fulfilling to be in a position to support people during some of the worst times in their lives.
Several factors set us apart from other organizations. First and foremost, we focus on the “human” in humanitarian aid, meaning we treat everyone with the utmost respect and love. We never overlook, belittle, or degrade any individual we are assisting. Additionally, our organization prioritizes underserved areas that are often the last to receive aid. By focusing on these communities first, we ensure that those who need help the most receive it promptly.
In summary, our commitment to treating everyone with dignity and our focus on underserved areas truly differentiate us in the field of disaster relief. Our dedication to these principles has enabled us to make a significant impact, providing hope and support when it is needed most.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey with Christ is Relief is the incredible power of community and collaboration. In the face of disasters, the strength and resilience of people coming together to support one another are truly remarkable. No matter how prepared we are as an organization, it is the collective effort of our team, volunteers, sponsors, and the communities we serve that makes a real difference.
I’ve also learned the value of perseverance and adaptability. The challenges we face—whether in securing funding, building a committed team, or responding to unpredictable disasters—require constant learning and flexibility. Each obstacle has taught us to be more innovative, resourceful, and compassionate.
Ultimately, the journey has reinforced the importance of treating every individual with respect and empathy. Seeing the direct impact of our work on people’s lives during their most vulnerable times has been a profound reminder that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to a larger wave of positive change.
