Today we’d like to introduce you to Geraldine Concepcion.
Hi Geraldine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My passion for makeup started at a very young age, I remember my mom used to have a HUGE lipstick collection, from a variety of reds to a very unique frosted metallic purple lipstick! Definitely, she is the biggest inspiration in my life, always hustling, always a great wife and mom, and yet a smart businesswoman!!!
I went to college for my BA in Political Sciences but I used to do freelance on my days off of college, my family and friends were my first “clients” and after that this became stronger.
I moved from Venezuela to the USA in 2017 after I graduated from college and since I came here, I always felt makeup was my path in this country. I already had an Instagram account since 2016 where I used to post makeup looks… my boyfriend at that time (now husband), was the one behind everything, the name, the content, the pictures, and even the lighting!!! He has definitely being my biggest support since day one, that’s why I always said the “hubs” is half of @makeupbygera and I feel the luckiest woman in the world because of him.
I am currently showing a more personal side of my on my account which honestly helped me to connect more with my audience, I consider them Insta-Friends because of the great connection we have, I still share makeup looks, tips, and tricks, even lifestyle (now that I just bought my first home with the hubs) with my followers. I’ve had amazing partnership with brands during this whole experience and being able to live that and share with the ones that love me it is definitely priceless!!!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t!!! As an immigrant you have to double the job and work as hard as you can to prove yourself and others, -but most important to yourself- that it doesn’t matter where you come from as long as you work hard on your dreams and achieve your goals.
Being away from your family, your country, your friends, having to start fresh with a whole different culture and language it’s never easy, but knowing that everything you are doing now it’s helping you to build the future and the life you want it’s a very exciting thing!
So, I always try to focus on my goals, I always like to think on my parents being proud of me for everything I’ve done and everything that’s coming, see how proud my husband is for everything I’ve achieved in such a short period of time here, those are the little things that keep me going.
I believe you have to protect your energy at all costs, so having people in the same page it helps a lot to make things easier.
There’s a cliche phrase that I always like to repeat to myself “she believe she could, so she did”, there’s nothing more true than that!!! I believe we are the only ones who can change our reality, simple as that. Yes, it’s not easy, yes, it takes time, but it is so worth it. And remember, there’s no rainbow without rain!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
It’s funny because I feel in my head, I could do anything or everything!!! But I am positive that I was born to make people feel pretty, confident, good with themselves and in their own skin, my job is just a confidence booster!!! Makeup it’s not only the superficial side but also the self-esteem side and that’s my favorite!!!
Professionally I love to connect with brands, and I think I am really good at that. I feel the passion I have for makeup is mostly self-esteem / corporate side and I think I do really good on those areas, one of my biggest dreams (fun fact) it’s actually working for a well-known brand as part of their creative team.
I used to freelance a lot and now I feel the o my way I could do freelance it would be only for wedding destinations because… who doesn’t love to travel!?
I feel what sets me apart from others is how real and honest I like to be with my clients, it doesn’t matter if it’s a class, makeup appointment, virtual makeup class or just assisting my clients on their makeup purchases, I always like to make them feel we have a connection and in fact, I do like to make connections and make them come back again for the learning and also the experience, you can’t find that everywhere.
