Daily Inspiration: Meet Gloria Mutiri

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gloria Mutiri.

Hi Gloria, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My parents immigrated to the United States from the Democratic Republic of Congo when I was really young. They passed away before I graduated high school. I was sent to the foster care system and was so oppressive. Sports helped me find my way out. I didn’t have the funds to play competitive sports but my community rallied behind me to propel me forward into my collegiate career. I played at the University of Oregon at the highest level of collegiate volleyball and I am now headed into my fourth season as a professional volleyball player. My nonprofit, Nakupenda, is dedicated to creating community behind young athletes with stories just like mine. We want to make sure that all voices are heard and opportunities are given to those who are the hardest to find.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey— in my upbringing, my collegiate career, or in the vision behind Nakupenda. Nonetheless, it has been worth every obstacle and the lessons that I’ve learned in such a short amount of time have helped me create a tight knit community.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a veteran professional athlete, I live overseas and I compete nine months out of the year. In my last season, I was top scorer of the 3rd best league in the world. My competitiveness had opened opportunities to connect with sponsors, athletes, and fans globally. I have brought communities together from Puerto Rico, Africa, and Europe to support the pipeline of young athletes. My dedication to giving back to Africa through sports drives everything I do. What sets me apart is having my own nonprofit and maintaining a high level professional sports career.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Being curious has worked the best for me. I am always asking the next question. I have been networking through Dallas for three years now, and I have learned to remain curious about everyone. Someone has counsel that could upgrade your organization!
