Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Newman.
Haley, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The hair world was always very intriguing to me. However, college was pushed very hard on me as I would be the first in my family to go and graduate with a degree. In 2019, I was in my second semester of college, with not a clue what I wanted to major in. While in school, I had a part-time job at a salon as the receptionist. This fueled my interest in all things hair, but I was nervous to make the jump from college to cosmetology school.
After discussing my thoughts with my boyfriend at the time (now my fiancé – YAY), he encouraged me to enroll in cosmetology school. He has always been my number-one supporter.
School was hard; I’m not going to lie. It was a lot of very repetitive work, and I tend to get bored very easily. Not to mention being forced to do services that you had zero interest in doing. School ONLY gets you ready to pass state board; it doesn’t teach you all the techniques you need to know in order to achieve the very specific looks clients are requesting these days.
I powered through because I wanted to prove everyone who doubted me wrong; I mean – I am a Scorpio.
Once I finished school, we made the move to Fort Worth. Not knowing a single soul or having any idea what I was doing, I was so nervous that I would fail. But I didn’t let the fear of failure stop me from working towards my goals.
A few weeks after the move, I secured a job as an assistant at a commission salon. It was a summit salon that worked on a level system. In order to level jump, you had to hit a retail and service dollar goal three months in a row; If you missed a month, you had to start over. Once I finished assisting and became a level 1 stylist, I jumped to a level 2 in three months! I didn’t hit my goals the first month as a level 2 stylist and ended up becoming a level 3 stylist in four months. Jumping to a level 3 in a year or less was unheard of. Everyone was shocked at how fast I grew.
Moving here, I knew I would have to work extremely hard. Harder than stylists who were from here because like I said, I didn’t know anyone or even have the smallest bit of clientele to get started.
I spent a lot of time on social media learning how to gain exposure and build my clientele which ultimately is where about 95% of my clientele has come from, give or take.
After becoming a level 3 stylist, I decided to leave the summit salon and open up my own suite. Working in a suite is not for everybody. I tend to be more on the introverted side, so I thrive in a peaceful environment. Once I made that switch, my business grew exponentially.
I have been in my suite for about a year and a half now. I have a full clientele of over 400 clients and a community of over 45,000 people between Instagram and TikTok that support me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely not! This industry will eat you alive and spit you out if you don’t have thick skin. I feel like my biggest struggle in the beginning was dealing with drama. Women tend to be very catty, especially when there are issues with jealousy. I grew my career VERY quickly, and for whatever reason – some stylists hated to see it. They would be very passive-aggressive, and catty and create problems that didn’t even exist in reality.
This is something I will never understand. I have always believed in “Community over competition.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in low-maintenance color and extensions! Getting your hair done is a luxury, and luxury comes with a price tag. With low maintenance color, my clients don’t have to worry about spending more money and time in my chair because they can go 4-6 months in between color appointments.
I am known for my lived-in-color techniques and helping other stylists grow their careers through social media.
I’m most proud of helping other stylists grow and sharing my knowledge. I offer a shadow day program where stylists from all over can spend the day with me to learn all of my techniques, the why behind them, how to grow their clientele and social media, etc
I believe what sets me apart from others is the mindset I have that was mentioned previously – community over competition, always!
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporter is my fiancé, hands down. He has been my rock from the beginning. We are both business owners, so we really rely on each other when we need help, advice, and encouragement. I can’t even begin to thank him enough. I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for him.
