Today we’d like to introduce you to Harriette Patrick Barron.
Hi Harriette, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello, my name is Harriette Patrick Barron. I am a proud mother, wife, author, and caretaker. I wear a lot of hats, but all that makes me who I am. I kept my maiden name because I wanted to honor my father, Reverend William Patrick. He always encouraged my writing, but he never had a chance to see me publish my first book. I began my writing journey as a class assignment several years ago. I had already gained my B.A. in Sociology several years previously but decided to return to pursue my teaching degree. During my writing course, my teacher asked us to write about a very important event that had happened in our lives. Reluctantly, I wrote about my kidnapping and sexual assault while in college. I hesitantly shared my story with my class and encouraged everyone to thrive no matter the crisis. My classmates were overwhelmed and even told me that my story had helped them deal with their own life challenges. My teacher encouraged me to write a book, and that is how my writing journey began. I continued to be influenced by my challenges, trauma, celebrations, and recovery. I was inspired to write fictional stories about love, loss, and survival. These stories have influenced people to reach beyond their current situation and know that anything is possible.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has not been smooth. I struggled financially for many years and was barely able to get my books self-published. Once they were published, I had no money to market my books or get the word out. I felt frustrated because I had sacrificed a lot to get my book published, and yet no one knew about my wonderful stories. I also struggled with writing because I had two small premature babies who needed constant medical care. Those years were very challenging because I had no time to write, but also those very experiences ignited a fire inside of me for some great stories. Although I write mostly Faith Fiction Books, a lot of my true experiences strongly influence my stories and characters.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am currently a home health attendant for Disabled Adults, but I have over 18 years of professional experience working in the human services field. I loved my jobs as a Crisis Mental Health Specialist, A Child Abuse investigator, A Foster Home Case Manager, and a Mental Health Service Coordinator. I am also a sexual assault survivor and trauma survivor, so I feel that I am more than qualified to help those in crisis. In the future, I plan to become a certified life coach to further assist people who are in real need. I am proud of the way my faith in God has carried me through difficult times and also gave me fuel to help others through my stories and public speaking. I believe that my life’s experiences have been used to set me apart from others. I have relied on my faith to carry me through kidnapping, sexual assault, 1 child death, 2 premature babies, my own depression and recovery, and now happiness with my life. Only my faith in God could have nursed me through challenging times.
What do you think about happiness?
My children make me very happy. They were both micro preemies, which means both were about 1 pound each. I spent 6 months each with them in intensive care, and during those times it really built my faith. To see them ages 7 and 9, run, play, laugh, smile, and sing really makes me happy. Also, I love to write, and when I meet someone who is changed by my novels, it makes me very happy.
