Today we’d like to introduce you to Helen Sanderson.
Hi Helen, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Glitter Goddess Pots started during a time of exploration for me. I was postpartum with my second child and started to make planters for my own use. People began to ask to purchase them, and I excitedly said yes! It had been years since I had a steady creative outlet and I was thrilled to be getting in touch with that part of myself again. I jumped right in, full throttle. I started attending local markets and then shortly after also began being sold in local Denton stores such as Bewitched Denton and Sleeping Lizards. I expanded what I was making and allowed myself to explore all of my interests through my newfound art form. I started making tarot cards, planchets, candles, and Goddess figurines. The thing I love most about what I do, is there are no rules. There are no guidelines. I have been able to play again and truly express who I am through my work. This journey has been such a success for me business-wise, but also a huge success for my mental health. I am so grateful to be where I am at today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles when starting a new business. On a personal level, the challenge has been balancing motherhood while trying to run a business and be an active artist. I always want to be there for my kids, I want them to feel my presence strongly. I also want to have my own identity outside of motherhood, and be able to explore as an artist. Even as I sit trying to answer these questions, I find myself constantly interrupted by my kids’ needing things. Trying to find the balance of motherhood is a journey without end, I am always learning more about who I am as a mother and person. On the business side of things, gaining connections and learning all the ins and outs of how the local markets are run is a learning process. I am very grateful for all the awesome vendors and people who run markets in Denton. We truly have some great people out here.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in bold, glitter pottery. My best seller is the glittery booties which look like a scrumptious booty that varies in color and glitter composition. My work truly represents who I am as a person; bold, loud, courageous. I am queer person who is also neurodivergent. I am proud of overcoming the challenges that being neurodivergent can present. I have had to find the ways that I work best, focus on organization, and allow myself to learn my limits Something I love about my work is those parts of myself are reflected in each piece I make. No two pieces are the same. Everything I make is truly unique… Burn out can happen when making the same kinds of items over and over, but because each of my pieces are different, I get to play and explore with each one. My items stand out for so many physical reasons, but I think what draws people to them the most is my authenticity as a person and the intention that goes into each piece.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I hope to see people buying more locally-made pottery. It’s so easy to go buy a pot from a big box store but it would be amazing if more people thought about supporting artists such as myself.
